Eyal Nachum Explains Four Different Types of Public Speaking

For many people, speaking before a huge audience is a scary task. Public speaking can become a good career option; many people are joining classes where they can learn skills and techniques to speak well and efficiently before a large audience. To be a successful speaker, you should consider these four different types of public speaking described here by Eyal Nachum:

Speaking to Enlighten

When an individual gives a speech in front of an audience to convey information on a particular topic or issue, it is known as an informative speech. Business presentations, class presentations, and college seminars are a few examples of informative speeches. A person getting ready for an informative speech has to research the topic thoroughly. It should be small and specific because long informative speeches (lectures) can make the audience become uninterested.

Speaking to Influence

Influential speeches are those where you make an effort to influence or convince an audience about your idea or product. These speeches propose to persuade and transform the opinions of the audience. This can be a complex task as you could be facing a large audience who may have completely different views from your own. Eyal Nachum (Co-founder of Moneta International UAB) says, " The most crucial point to be kept in mind here is that if you wish to influence others' visions and ideas, you have to demonstrate your eagerness while speaking". Influential speeches are usually given by sales and marketing professionals to attract interest in their products.

Speaking to Motivate

Speaking to motivate is a top-level of influential speaking. It's beyond influence and convincing. The purpose is to motivate an individual enough to take a particular step—to act. This is a dominant level of speaking. The speaker not only tries to gain support for some cause or reason, but wishes the people he or she is speaking with to take concrete action. It is portrayed by a show of charisma, powerful words, and huge emotional sharing and showing of conviction.

Speaking to Amuse

Ceremonial speeches are another form of public speaking, typically delivers at parties, weddings, funerals, retirements, etc. One crucial factor to make these speeches effective is to add a personal touch. Usually these speeches are delivered for people the speaker knows, and it therefore it is good if he/she can bring in stories and incidents about the particular person. The speech can be entertaining, touching or emotional, based on the occasion and the mood.

Conclusion

Public speaking is a skill which is best mastered through constant practice. A talkative individual may not be able to deliver the best speech. To deliver a good speech, one must initially understand the type of speech he/she is expected to deliver and prepare accordingly. A good public speaker is one who knows the audience requirements and is flexible enough to accept changes that may take place even while giving the speech.
