The Rice Riots of 1918

Hi Steemit Friends,

I wanted to participate in the sndbox share a story challenge. This challenge not only let me know more about Japan's history, but also appreciate what we have now in 2018.

What I wanted to share for this challenge is the Rice riots of 1918 which happened in between July to September 1918 which a series of events had bought down Terauchi Masatake's administration and his party.

Due to the world war in that period, supplies including food was scarce and during this period, the price of rice has gone out of control. As the price of the rice continues to rise, the government during that period did not do much to support the farmers and community. They in fact were buying up all the rice supply and sending them overseas to support troops and drove prices up even higher.

Therefore protests started to happen. It started in Toyama prefecture which was first peaceful but eventually escalated to a violent protest. People were clashing with government parties, police and armed officers. There were many arrests which ranges from a small fine or death penalty.

On 29 September 1918, Terauchi and his team resigned taking responsibility for their mismanagement.

Now days in Toyama prefecture, it is still a rice growing region.
