The Defense for POS....

I am not a fan of POS, I much prefer the idea of POW. In fact, I have even referred to myself as a POW maximalist, but I do try to be fair and balanced in my thinking and there is a weak point to POW that POS does not have.

People tend to favor the argument for supporting POS something along the lines of saving the planet from the horrors of high-energy demanding blockchains. Well, I've never felt that was a very big deal. We still do many mining activities that require more energy, but those operations have not been attacked.

Honestly, in my view, POS is more about saving the whales more than it is about saving the whales. POS empowers the rich to get richer and become the necessary aristocrats of the network, and all of us at the lower end as their dependence. It encourages a network where the whales are not just rich and powerful, they're necessary for us to even transact. POS, in my mind, turns the lower and middle class into dependents, and this can lead to social disadvantage in the future.

However, there is a weakness to POW. This weakness we often claim is not a weakness, because we say that the difficulty adjusts. If there are less miners, then mining becomes more profitable with increased chance of reward. This is true, however, it seems to not be true enough. In this bear market we are seeing lots of miners backing away and its so severe that many people are coming to realize we have a big problem. In fact, this means it is an excellent attack point for a malicious enemy to the network. POS does not have this weakness, even in a weak economy, stakers will keep on staking and the wheels will keep turning relatively smoothly. This is an advantage, because it could also lead to more stability in its economic value and utility.
