You need to remember, this is still new technology in terms of mass adoption. So there is going to be crazy volatility. As better iterations of blockchain/hyperledgers, scalablity and speed are introduced, I think we will see more and more specialized applications interacting instead of wiping each other out. Also, block chain has many uses other than a medium of exchange, as long as the market is using Ether for smart contracts or whatever, it will always have a value.
