Contradictions of the Human Heart—Does this apply to you?

'We teach best what we most need to learn.'
—Richard Bach

It is a paradox of human nature that, short of being a genius or a saint, we are not equal to our most profound or luminous teachings. Furthermore, as all teachers know, we continue to learn as we go along, from ourselves and those we propose to teach.

Adam Gopnik, an eloquent and penetrating contemporary cultural critic, elaborated beautifully on this seeming-contradiction of the human heart. After making a pilgrimage to visit a philosopher he deeply admired, Karl Popper, Gopnik returned surprised and somewhat disappointed at the gulf between the real encounter and his ideal version.

Popper-in-person was not only unlike Popper-on-the-page, he appeared to be the opposite of some of his teachings. This led Gopnik to profoundly meditate upon this discrepancy for a full quarter of a century. The outcome of his deep reflection is Gopnik termed The Law of the Mental Mirror Image.

Below, is an excerpt where Gopnik develops this fascinating, paradoxical idea which, in turn, has haunted me... for years. See if you agree with it and, if so, what examples you can provide your own life experience:

It's funny that the surname of Adam Gopnik means in Russian.

Gopnik is a pejorative stereotype describing a particular subculture in Russia, Ukraine, and other former Soviet republics to refer to young men or women of sometimes lower-class suburban areas (usually under 25 years of age) coming from families of poor education and (sometimes) income.

Gopniks are often seen wearing Adidas tracksuits, which was popularised by the 1980 Moscow Olympics Soviet team. Sunflower seeds are habitually eaten by gopniks, especially in Ukraine and southern Russia. Gopniks can also be seen wearing flat caps and Adidas backpacks.

Gopniks are often associated with cheap alcohol, such as low quality vodka and light beer, and cheap cigarettes.

A similar subculture in the UK is called Chav.

Interesting cultural background... but, aside from the name, what did you think of the content of the post?
