Wanted To Downvote Someone Today, But Decided Not To: My Downvoting Rules
Greeting My Dear Fellows
Did you ever got so mad at somebody that you wanted to down vote him/her???
Today, I had a strange encounter with a lady on discord. And it didn't ended pleasantly.
Before I talk about my downvoting practices, let me tell you some background story.
Here is the dialogue that happened. (Translated)
Lady: Are you free?
Me: Yes...
Lady: I want to ask you a question. If I have some cryptos in my Bittrex account, can I convert them directly to SBD... Or do I have to first convert them to bitcoin and then buy SBD with those bitcoin.
(Seriously man! No greetings, no introduction and nothing what so ever. She just want to ask me the question.)
Me: What's your name and from where do you belong?
Lady: My name is Rafia. (She wrote that in Urdu, to let me know she is my country fellow.)
(It's always exciting for me to connect with my fellow countrymen/women. So I asked her about what city she lives in?)
Me: Which city do you live in?
Lady: I told you that I live in Pakistan. I asked you a question and instead of answering you are asking me questions. I already answer two of your questions now answer mine.
(How rude? Her reply really irked me. I mean, I was just trying to nice and be a gentleman and she was taking me for granted.)
Me: Lady, that's not a good way to talk with others. First, make a proper introduction to me and then I will answer your question. You contacted me(remember) ... I am too busy to be wasting time talking with people like you. Being a lady doesn't absolve you from your basic human duties of being nice and courteous.😡
Lady: Don't talk with me about manners. Your mentality is depicted in your conversation. You are not the only person on discord....
Me: Good luck dear.

I have observed this problem with many newbies... They contact you, and all they want straight away is upvote or get their questions answered.
No focus on building relationship and connection.
For the sake of argument, let assume that one is not good at building relationships and connections, but being nice and courteous does take too much effort. All that is needed, is you not being an "total jurk".
That conversation left me irked, and for a moment I thought about downvoting her(I admit). But, in the end the better judgment prevailed.
I am not a frequent and staunch downvoter. I think why downvote someone, when you can teach them. But some people are beyond teaching, that's why they made the downvote option available.
There are some basic self made rules that I adhere to when it comes to downvoting.
1. Never downvote anyone for personal reasons.
2. Only downvote when it's absolutely necessary, for betterment of the platform(steemit).
So...
Did you ever downvoted anybody or thought about it???
Do you have any rules regarding downvoting, that you stick with???

This is my first time using eSteem Android App and it has exceeded my expectations.
You don't go on Steem to attack someone for messaging you on Discord anyway. I've only ever downvoted spam and abuse.
Also, it makes perfect sense to me that a newbie would just want a direct answer. If I'm about to make a post on Steem and I've got it all ready and then run into an issue I message people to try to figure it out. I don't use that time to cultivate relationships if I was trying to solve my problem, as would anyone.
People asking for upvotes is really annoying but yes if they do it on your post, that is spam. If they ask you on discord, it's because you provided access to your discord via Steem somewhere otherwise how did they find you? (that's your choice).
Ideally everyone is respectful, but the least we can do is help the newbies rather than give them a lesson on manners.
@xabi, although the lady can be annoying for being so direct on discord, we cannot downvote her for that matter. Like what @scottcbusiness said, we should only downvote spam and abuse. Hmmm, although I admit I downvoted annoying comments in the past lol. Never again.

When you ask for some one's help, least you can do is be respectful...

Somethings always get lost in translation.
No I fully understand that it wasn't respectful however, the most common standard on Steemit would be that you would never take an issue outside of Steemit (discord) and then bring it to steem and punish them here to get revenge. Like I had someone downvote me for a memo I sent on my post which was widely appreciated so people lashed out at him for attacking me outside of where the issue was. Your issue must be with the post that you downvote
