Leonid Alekseevich Kolesnikov was born in 1893 in Moscow, to a merchant family. Because of the beginning of the First World War, he did not complete his studies at the institute for only 2 years: he had to master the driver profession. Leonid planted his first two lilac varieties in his parents' garden, and slowly became infected with the desire to gather. Kolesnikov visited damaged aristocrats and plantations, searching for flowering purple bushes and taking them home.

He studied a lot of literature, identifying varieties from gardening catalogs. In 1923 more varieties of lilacs grew in their garden! Kolesnikov was not afraid of the difficulties associated with the lack of knowledge in gardening. He took up self-education, studied the works of Michurin and Timiryazev, and later met MP Nagibina, a researcher at the Botsad of Moscow State University, with her, he began to carry out the first experiments to breed new lilacs Interesting fact: the selection of lilacs for Kolesnikov became the main work of life, although formally it was his hobby: he continued to work as a driver, paying only free from work time.

Fortunately, his wife, at the Yakimanskaya Olympiada, was truly divided crazy about lilac. One variety is named after him. In 1952, Kolesnikov received the Stalin Prize "for breeding a large number of new lilac varieties". By the way, right at the initiative of Kolesnikov it was the nursery of the Lilac Park on the Schelkovskoe Highway, which was very popular with Moscow people and photographers, and the boulevard next to it was called lilac. Kolesnikov brought about 300 varieties of lilac (about 50 left), they were popular throughout the world. The beloved "Moscow Beauty" was created in honor of the city's 800th anniversary.
