My Thursday Favorites #2.12 Contest Entry – My Favorite Seafood

I like/love all seafood I have ever tried. Seafood in general is one of my favorite foods. Here are a few of my very favorites in this genre of food.

Salmon

My wealthy uncle used to take annual trips out to where ever the salmon run in Northern Canada and bring back his limit of 30-50 pound fish. These were frozen and brought out to be cooked by his chef on special occasions through the year.

We sat at formal dining table and had individual lemons to squeeze on this wonderful fish. Leftovers came to our house and I would sneak down and eat it all in the middle of the night. Everyone else was snoozing and losing.

Smelt

My mother used to cook a small fish called smelt when I was young. It was very cheap and all she did was shake it in a bag with flour, pepper and salt. Then fry it up quickly in butter.

Later in life I was in Massachusetts for a business trip and found a Portuguese restaurant with that exact smelt dish and went back all three nights I was there for the same thing.

Crab Legs

On the east coast of Oahu Hawaii in a place called the Polynesian Cultural Center. Their dinner is an all you can eat buffet with huge crab legs. I ate those on a few trips and refilled my plate over and over again.

Shrimp

On another island called Gran Canaria in Spain and off the African coast, the was a restaurant on a cliff serving shrimp cocktail with huge shrimp about as long as my whole hand.

You got TEN shrimp served on ice with a delicious sauce something like thousand island dressing, only with a big lemony kick. This was over 40 years ago and I can still taste it.

Thus ends my brief walk down seafood memory lane which could go on hours longer. Now I live in Malaysia where all fish and seafood is too expensive for me to eat! {{{sniffle}}}

Oops! Thailand has river fish street food cheap and cooked on the BBQ. Drool...
