ExCellent Day At The Docklands
I took a breather during SITC today
and walked around the ExCel building for some sight seeing. The grey skies have returned and London looks normal again :)
The ExCel is a truly large enclosure. Like the O2 building, I’m quite sure you can park an airplane in there. It’s meant to accommodate tens, if not hundreds of thousands of people, as such is used for large conferences - often multiple conferences simultaneously.
The Docklands are not as developed as the rest of London, so there’s still a lot of open space. The river (Thames) is also quite wide there - which contributes to the perceived spaciousness.
I was quite intrigued by some decaying structures across the river from the ExCel. They, no doubt, where very useful buildings in their time, and probably considered large back then. They’ve since been completely dwarfed by surrounding structures to the point of total insignificance.
Funny, one of them claims to be "Millennium Mills”. If that’s in reference to the recent turn of the century, as in Millennium Dome (The 02), Millennium Wheel (London Eye) or Millennium Bridge (Wobbly Bridge), then the building hasn’t fared very well has it? It’s only been 18 years - look at the state of it!
Peace and Love ✌🏿
