EOS CPU power can't mine Bitcoin

in #eos5 years ago (edited)

Today, someone on r/eos asked about how to mine Bitcoin using spare power from EOS network. He asked:

If there was ever a dApp created that could connect to your EOS account and the Bitcoin network simultaneously, and utilize your EOS account's CPU to mine Bitcoin (if that's even possible, I have no idea), how long would your CPU last, dependent on number of tokens delegated to CPU? I'm not sure there's even a way to figure this out without testing it.

I replied: All of the CPU power available in the EOS network, that is, CPU power that you will get after stacking 1 billion EOS for CPU won't be able to mine a single sha-256 hash in a day.

Bitcoin mining requires application specific chips. They are commonly known as ASIC miners (Application Specific Integrated Circuit). From wiki:

An application-specific integrated circuit is an integrated circuit (IC) customized for a particular use, rather than intended for general-purpose use.

You can't mine bitcoin with hardware meant for general purpose use. The CPU time you see in block explorers come from CPUs used by block producers. The BPs generally use the highest powerful CPU available in the market.

For example, EOS UK use an xeon 8 core processor. https://eosuk.io/eos-block-producer-technical-specifications/

That processor is what powers the EOS network. It's great for powering EOS but in Bitcoin, it is of no use because ASICs are 100s of times faster. Therefore, EOS CPU power can't be used to mine bitcoin.

Good comparison, also tells us a lot about the difference of efficiency of those two networks...
