Would You Sell Your Land @ Per Kilogram A Piece?

in #environment6 years ago (edited)

The other day during my walks, I was shocked to discover a brick kiln unit in the midst of the forest. Everything seemed so serene and cool in this area with dense forests and huge farms nearby. But finding a brick manufacturing unit put me thinking, for where is all human development heading to!

First let me tell you how these people make bricks out of the fertile forest soil.

First they dug their land upto 3-4 feet depth to excavate all the top soil.

Then it is mixed with some dry chaff to give some strength and some water and then beaten to make a uniform mixture:

This mixture is enough to make 700-800 bricks

After that small lumps are made out of this mixture:

Then with the use of a mould / die, it is manually given the shape of a brick:

On an average, one person creates about 100 such brick moulds in an hour. These are then sun dried:

After that these are baked in a kiln with the help of forest wood:

A few days of heat makes them strong, hard and ready to use as construction material. Thus we get the final product:

Then these are transported to nearby city where an 8.4" brick fetches INR 4.50 i.e. a truck of 2000 bricks cost Rs. 9,000/-

I asked the person there that what will he do when all his land will be dug and there won't be any top soil left for making more bricks. He looked a little confused and replied that he will buy more land. Then he added that the present land is sufficient for about 3-4 years, so he is not worried at the moment.
What a short term thinking! Are we so short sighted that we can't think beyond 4-5 years? Humans in general are so selfish that they only think for their short term gains and destroy the Nature and the environment in the long run. IMO, making bricks out of fertile top soil, which can grow a lot of food is just stupidity. This is like selling your land at the rate of per Kilogram. But may be everyone of us has got different needs.

Would you like to sell your land at the rate of per kilogram a piece?

It's interesting that there's enough clay in the top soil to actually make brinks. Typically the two, fertile top soil and clay, are mutually exclusive.
To be good top soil there needs to be a lot of organic material which when fired burns and makes the bricks crumble. But they sure look like good bricks!
It's also interesting that he can make enough to buy more land in the future. It's no doubt more profitable than farming, even if short sighted.
