About "The Caves of Steel"

Source

The Caves of Steel is a science fiction novel by American writer Isaac Asimov. It is a detective story and illustrates an idea Asimov advocated, that science fiction can be applied to any literary genre, rather than just being a limited genre in itself.

The book was first published as a serial in Galaxy magazine, from October to December 1953. A Doubleday hardcover followed in 1954.

Source

In "The Caves of Steel", Asimov introduces the "C/Fe civilization".

The "C" stands for carbon based life (humans).

Source

The "Fe" stands for iron based "life".

Source

The C/Fe world is a place where humans and robots live in symbiotic harmony and together work towards the good of the whole civilization.

I've always been fascinated with the different interpretations by the many authors and creators of movies concerning our future existence with human-like machines (robots, androids, synthetic humans, etc.).

Source

In fact, I discussed these issues in my series of "Detroit: Become Human" articles.

But the very first time I ever read about life with robots was in Isaac Asimov's series of Robot books.

Asimov takes great pains in setting stages where the "grey areas" of his "Three Laws of Robotics" result in serious, sometimes catastrophic situations.

Source

Nevertheless, Asimov's "Three Laws of Robotics" have become the de facto "rules/guidelines" for designing the AI for our present and future robots.

"The Caves of Steel" by Isaac Asimov is finally pushing forward towards becoming a movie!

I am pretty stoked about this recent news about "The Caves of Steel" movie project!

Akiva Goldsman is writing the script for "The Caves of Steel" movie; translated: Real progress towards movie production is happening as we speak.

It’s been almost five years since it was announced that 20th Century Fox has plans to bring to the big screen Isaac Asimov‘s 1954 novel The Caves of Steel.

Today, however, the project seems to be moving forward once again as Variety reports that Akiva Goldsman has come aboard to script the adaptation. Goldsman is no stranger to the work of Asimov.

He previously scripted the studio’s I, Robot, which borrowed some plot elements from Caves of Steel.

My Brief Book Review

Source

Like Asimov, Elijah Baley and R. Daneel Olivaw, the main characters of "The Caves of Steel", are two of my favorite protagonists of the Robot books.

Source

Their world is three millennia in the future.

Hyperspace is common, and several (fifty) nearby planets worlds have been colonized (called "Spacer worlds").

Unlike Earth, Spacer worlds are rich, have low population density compared to Earth - a planet perpetually on the verge of over population.

In The Caves of Steel, and later sequels like "The Naked Sun", Asimov's grim description of Earth's struggle with over population is juxtaposed with the life of the luxury-seeking Spacers, a civilization with limits on births.

Source

Elijah Baley is a police detective who is assigned to investigate the murder of a prominent Spacer.

Baley is grudgingly partnered with a robot, R. Daneel Olivaw.

Source

From the appearance of robots into their society, Earth people placed them low into Earth's strict hierarchical society.

They [the robots] become the objects of the public's growing anger over all the human jobs taken away by the use of cheaper, efficient worker robots.

But progress is progress and even with the hostility resulting in riots, robot integration is inevitable; albeit a slow process fraught with human vs. robot issues.

I highly recommend "The Caves of Steel" - a classic within the Asimov Robot book series.

About the Author

Believing that school was too boring, he dropped out of High School early; only to earn an AA, BS and MBA in less than 4 years much later in life – while working full-time as a Navy/Marine Corps Medic.

In spite of a fear of heights and deep water, he performed high altitude, free-fall parachute jumps and hazardous diving ops in deep, open ocean water.

After 24 years of active duty, he retired in Asia.

Since then, he's been a full-time, single papa and actively pursuing his varied passions (Writing, Disruptive Technology, Computer Science and Cryptocurrency - plus more hobbies too boring or bizarre for most folk).

He lives on an island paradise with his teenage daughter, longtime girlfriend and three dogs.

Awesome, love good sci-fi, excited to see this one come out. Really enjoyed several of his prior film adaptations.

Ok I didn't know that iRobot was part of Asimov's work. Haven't read his books yet and will have to go check them out soon. Thanks for sharing!

You are very welcome.

Great news. Glad hear that the writer of

  • I, Robot
  • A Beautiful Mind
  • The Da Vinci Code
  • Angels & Demons

But he has written some bad scripts too. Let's hope for the best. Denis Villeneuve could be a great pick for the director.

I will try to check this out I do need to read more but was going to go for more books to teach me things but I enjoy stories like these.

So I must quickly go read the book now before the movie comes out ;-) But really: very nice post again, @jaichai :-)

I haven't read this one, but I'm a fan of Asimov so anything of his on the screen is more than welcome!

Nice to learn a little bit more about you!
