Sleep paralysis.

in #english8 years ago

Good morning dear friends steemian; Today I want to share with you a somewhat different post as I will talk about "The paralysis of sleep", to begin I will talk about what this disorder is about.

Sleep paralysis is a surprisingly common sleep disorder that can occur during the moments before falling asleep or at the time of awakening. Who suffers it, awakens abruptly having full awareness of his thoughts but staying physically paralyzed. The person feels trapped in his own body. Although he can open his eyes, he is not able to emit sound or move any muscle, which generates a considerable sense of anguish and fear

What is this disorder?

This disorder is due to an abnormal intrusion of a state of REM (rapid eye movement). You are literally awake, but part of your brain is still in the dream; since the mechanisms in the brainstem, in particular the vestibular, reticular, and oculomotor neurons, which impede bodily movements, block the sensory input and provide the anterior brain with the internally generated activity that characterizes brain activity during REM sleep.

It is said that this occurs due to an untimely disconnection between the brain and the body.

Why does this happen?

During sleep, we go through different stages of the dream. The stage of rapid eye movement (REM), which is the stage where sleep occurs. At this stage, a mechanism is created that protects us from the performance of our dreams, which basically means that all the activity of the muscles of our body will be suppressed during REM sleep (except the diaphragm and the eye muscles). This atony comes to an end when you move on to another stage of sleep or when you wake up.

Although sometimes something goes wrong, the person wakes up during REM sleep, and this protection mechanism does not come to an end.

The paralysis of sleep and hallucinations.

This disorder usually involves feelings of terror, anger and imminent death, since hallucinations are often terrifying. Many times it is like feeling something dark that sits on your chest and presses your breath. This does not exist, and there is no risk to life in any sense, since nothing of what we see and hear is real, and the paralysis gives in after a few minutes, usually there is an effort to be incorporated or contact with another person. come alarmed. Experiencing this can make a person feel a lot of anxiety and fear, but it does not cause physical harm.

This brain disorder occurs since time immemorial and is probably the explanation for many of the paranormal experiences that a good part of the population claims to have suffered after the decline

The image before placing it is called "The Nightmare", made by Henry Fuseli (1781) represents the folkloric interpretation of sleep paralysis: an incubus or goblin that oppresses the chest of the sleeper.

Personally, this has happened to me twice in my life and I can say that it is one of the worst feelings I have ever experienced in my life, because at the moment of this happening, you really feel that everything is real. When my body can move and I end up waking up, my heart is very fast, and of course, I am very afraid.
I appreciate that it has only happened twice in my life.

Let me know in the comments if this has ever happened to you.
