5 English Idioms
English idioms are an important part of everyday English. They come up all the time in both written and spoken English. Because idioms don't always make sense literally, you'll need to familiarize yourself with the meaning and usage of each idiom. That may seem like a lot of work, but learning idioms is fun, especially when you compare English idioms to the idioms in your own language.
a bad workman blames his tools
Meaning:
A person who has done something badly will seek to lay the blame on their equipment rather than admit their own lack of skill.
Turkish meaning
Oynamayan gelin (kız) yerim (gerim) dar dermiş. / Balık 'çok konuşurum ama ağzım su dolu' demiş.
Example
‘I just cringe at the very sight of cheap painting tools mainly because the old saying that a bad workman always blames his tools is wrong!’
like a bull in a china shop
Meaning
Behaving recklessly and clumsily in a situation where one is likely to cause damage.
Turkish meaning
Sakar, dikkatsiz, patavatsız
Example:
'She's like a bull in a china shop when dealing with people's feelings.'
one's salad days
Meaning:
The period when one is young and inexperienced
Turkish meaning:
gençlik günleri, acemilik yılları
Example:
‘the war seemed to be ending and so were my salad days’
the facts of life
Meaning:
Something unpleasant that is accepted because it cannot be changed.
Turkish meaning:
Hayatın gerçekleri
Example:
'Gloomy, rainy days are just one of the facts of life when you life in England.'
save (something) for a rainy day
Meaning:
To reserve something, especially money, for use in a time or period of unforeseen difficulty, trouble, or need
Turkish meaning:
Sakla samanı gelir zamanı / ak akçe karagün içindir
Example:
'You want to buy a new TV with your Christmas bonus, but you should really save it for a rainy day. I save a portion of my wages each month for a rainy day.'
