Masterpiece Finished after 15 Years Only

in #endless8 years ago (edited)

My little town of Amsterdam finished a masterpiece last week. A project started back in the year of 2003, was finally delivered to the general public. Last Saturday was the opening, the opening of our newest metro line. Seven years late! But, finally we connect the city from the financial district all the way to the northern part of town on the other side of the river 'IJ'.

9 point 7 kilometres long, of which 7 point 1 kilometres in tunnels, with a projected capacity of 120k travellers per day, to the cost of displacement of some monumental buildings, and a fine 3 Billion Euros (factor two of what was projected).

What a project it was! For 15 years, Amsterdam was a big building site! Interestingly, other European cities wishing a (additional) metro line as well, take Amsterdam as an example to what such wish may result into. Ok Ok, it is damn difficult to create metro lines underneath a city build on soft ground; Continuous collapsing tunnels and sinking buildings as a result.

And then today, this digital newspaper wrote this small article (source):

Translated into English, it says something like:

North / South Metro line closed for renovation

After a successful opening weekend, the North / South Metro line is closed again. The line is closed for a thorough renovation.

"Some parts of the line are outdated," says head engineer Marie Bakker. "For example, a number of tunnels are already 15 years old. We are going to look at that again now, to modernise the foundations. And of course we will also highlight everything again."

The renovation is expected to finish in 2031.

😂

I bought an apartment back in 2008 in Noord. Hoping the price would increase in 2012 when this project should be finished. Back then it was really disappointing to have the finish date postponed for 6 (!!!) years 😥

But now the prices should increase tremendously, or it may already did with the rest of Amsterdam in recent years?

Housing prices already went up hugely for Amsterdam in the last years. I'm not sure if it had a real positive impact for Noord. If it has then probably only for houses directly next to the noord-zuid lijn.

Ok ok :) most important is, you enjoy the pace where you live, so I hope you do.
