DELAYED - Fork in the road to Constantinople, Capital city of Ethereum, where PoS now rules

It appears that the long awaited Constantinople fork of the Ethereum blockchain has been delayed at the 11th hour. This is probably for the best, temporarily, since it was just discovered that the fork may not only solve some issues but also create further issues.

Initially the Costantinople fork is designed to facilitate the following changes:
• Will allow enabling state channels
• Lower the amount of computing power to enable smart contracts
• Lower the amount of gas to send transactions
• EIP1234 creates a block reward adjustment for Eth miners – “the Thirdening”

Miners will be rewarded with 2 ETH instead of 3 ETH when they solve a block so the new supply of Ether will go down, lowering the inflation rate of Ether.

Now as regular ETH holders we won’t need to do anything at all. Just keep your ETH wherever it is – exchange, wallet, trezor, MEW, etc and carry on as normal. It’s only the miners, exchanges and node operators that would need to make the necessary adjustments for the Constsntinople fork. And they will need to do it before January 17, 4:00am GMT. That was to be the scheduled time of Constantinople.

However…

“The Ethereum Core Developers and the Ethereum Security Community were made aware of the potential Constantinople-related issues identified by ChainSecurity on January 15, 2019. We are investigating any potential vulnerabilities… Out of an abundance of caution, key stakeholders around the Ethereum community have determined that the best course of action will be to delay the planned Constantinople fork that would have occurred at block 7,080,000 on January 16, 2019.”

It seems that the Constsntinople fork would have allowed an unwanted side effect which enables re-entrancy attacks. So far there are no vulnerable smart contracts so it looks like Joseph Lubin, Vitalik Buterin, Ethereum and ChainSecurity have successfully prevented an imminent vulnerability, much to their credit.

What do you think of the state of Ethereum at the moment? Apparently Ethereum GPU miners are operating on very thin margins at the current price of ETH around $150 or less. Of course, block reward reductions are probably necessary, like the bitcoin “halving” that occurs every few years on schedule. They are beneficial to the economy of crypto in the long run, but it apparently couldn’t happen at a worse time for miners now.

“Ethereum’s hashrate could fall drastically after the upgrade, which would hurt ETH’s value proposition in turn. Constantinople may also drastically increase ASIC-induced centralization.”

I think that is the most reasonable alteration that Vitalik could do after all these 51% attack, but of course, the announcement of that changes was made almost a year and half ago.

It was announced 18 months ago or more as you say, yet has been delayed more than once, and now at the last minute delayed again. The Constantinople fork of ETH does look like a good option, but they just need to smooth out the loopholes in the code it seems.

Totally agree, no one wants a DAO problem that create de hardfork of ETH and ETC

hi @julianhorack

I just accidentally bumped into your profile and I've scrolled through your old post just to realize that we seem to share a number of interests :)

In particular that we both share a similar passion towards cryptocurrencies and blockchain technology.

I will follow you closely :)
Take care, Piotr

Hey there @crypto.piotr good to be in touch, thanks for your comments. I'm glad we can meet here on steemit. It is hard to find like minded people here at my home town, so steemit has helped us meet and share ideas about our favourite subjects. I will check out your blog posts.

Dear @julianhorack

It is hard to find like minded people here at my home town, so steemit has helped us meet and share ideas about our favourite subjects.

I know what do you mean buddy. I've exactly similar experience.

Thanks for replying. I always appreciate people who engage back.

happy to engage comrade. Is it still ok to call each other comrade? In my country of South Africa it is the most common term used among the politicians of the ruling party when they address each other. I think it is a carry over form the days when the current ruling party was still an underground freedom-fighting movement during the previous oppressive Apartheid regime, and they went to get training in the old Soviet Union to fight back. And they won of course. Your name sounds Russian and it reminded me. I hope it's ok. Curious to know. I feel that as a member of the Brics bloc of countries we have an allegiance.

Dear @julianhorack

No problem at all my friend :)

I've learned lately about difficult situation of farmers in south africa. I'm so sorry for what is happening to your minority over there.

ps. Im Polish :)

Ah my bad, shows you how much i know about Europe and the North, you're actually Polish. My ancestors were Czech or maybe even Polish on father's side, but that was several generations ago apparently.

Yes the South Africans of European ancestry are receiving a degree of reverse racism now in the new South Africa. The currency is ZAR14/1$ and crime plus corruption is huge. The open space, natural surroundings and climate are beautiful though.

Dear @julianhorack

Thanks for your kind reply. I appreciate it a lot.

Yes the South Africans of European ancestry are receiving a degree of reverse racism ow in the new South Africa.

I've seen those guys in red t-shirts and I watched the interview with their leader. Insane :/

I hope your country will not follow Zimbabwe (exodus of "white" population and hyperinflation). But it seem that this is the road your country is heading :(

Yours
Piotr

The red t-shirts are called the Economic Freedom Fighters. How's that for a political party name? The leader was once in the ruling party but broke away when the president turned out to be so corrupt. He founded his own party just three years ago or so and has been gradually getting votes, while stirring up a radical left wing agenda. There is very little sign of a positive outcome; more like a slow decline over the coming years.
