Education Reform Concept

in #education6 years ago

So when it comes to the many problems we face as humans. Most people take the easy route and are either pointing them out or simply complaining about them. Which is not only annoying to constantly hear, but also counterproductive. Sure, it makes them feel like they are helping, or 'bringing awareness' but really, they are only making it easier for shitty regulations to take effect. Regulations that offer no real solutions, and in fact, restrict the chances of real change being allowed to take place. Which creates a cycle consisting of no results, more complaints, further regulation, and no progress.

This is my proposal. A solution to our current troubles with the education system. And while it is not perfect and needs some other aspects integrated into it. It seems like a viable starting point.

Having a system of education is an important aspect to having an educated and productive society. A fact that everyone should know and understand. Our system has remained mostly unchanged since its inception. Whether it be by design, or from political gridlock.
Needless to say, something has to be changed and I believe everyone understands that fact. Which leads me to an incredibly simple, yet effective solution.

The public education system we have currently, consists of grades K-12 and needs to be modified to be more flexible, but still remain simple yet effective. And the simple way to make this happen is to modify our start and stop points to include half numbers. This way, instead of an entire grade moving at one time once a year. The senior half of any grade moves on half way through the regular school year.
For example, instead of having grades 1, 2, 3, 4. We lobby to include more transparent grades of 1.5, 2.5, 3.5, and so on. That way, instead of students always moving annually to the next grade, their is an option for them to move bi-annually.
For instance, let's say that half way through through the fifth grade, the senior half of the class moves on to the sixth grade. They are then replaced by the senior half of the fourth grade moving on to be the new junior class in the fifth grade. making the school more fluid like.
There are many benefits that come from incorporating additional movement between grades. Such as the ability to move children along faster that are more advanced, without them skipping a whole year and having to learn to integrate with new peers. This works more easily because when the child only spends only half of a year in a single grade, they have time to get to know the senior half of the class, before moving on to the next grade with them. Naturally making them stand out less and be able to feel comfortable with their peers.

This system also works in the other direction as well. The same principle applies to children that may need more time in their current grade. Time that they can more easily be granted without the stigma that goes along with being "held back". Not to mention that they are only 1/2 of a year behind their regular class and will remain with half of their current group of peers for the remainder of that year. Leaving them with better familiarity of their class. And also making it possible for them to catch up with their original class if they quickly demonstrate the ability to do so.

But their are also other benefits that are gained that apply to the teachers as well as the students.
There is the saying that goes "To teach is to learn twice." And in this education model, the students that will be deemed the "senior " half will be setting the tone, and helping to teach the incoming "junior" half. Also making the transition easy on the teacher, seeing as the new students will have a previously established model of classroom etiquette to emulate. Which will make it more difficult for the new students to "act out" or "run the classroom". But at the same time being familiar with the senior half of the class from each past 1/2 year spent with them. Granting them more comfort and a smoother transition. Removing some of the fear factor that comes from transitioning into a new grade.

In essence, kids love to proclaim what they know to other children, and so will be eager to demonstrate their knowledge to the new incoming junior half. Creating a sort of excitement about the curriculum; and the ability to demonstrate that they know the answers and understand what they are learning. Healthy competition becomes a driving force for education and the retention of attention to to the curriculum.

There are certainly some logistical concerns that might need to be ironed out but certainly could be if this method were approached with a little enthusiasm. What are the downsides to this system? What could be improved on it? What is it missing?
