In fact, it is not a specific chronological age, but the child must meet certain prerequisites and, therefore, must have the necessary brain maturity to comply with the reading and writing process.
In some schools that have a very high level of education, they begin with the reading and writing process after seven (07) years of age in children, to ensure that all children have the necessary maturity; However, in other schools, they begin with the process around five (05) years of age or at an earlier age.
What are the prerequisites to know if the child is ready for reading and writing?
The prerequisites can focus on four (04) key points:
Oral language. It refers to the fact that the child must have an expressive language so complex, that is, as complex as that of an adult. Where the complex sentences are framed to communicate, the understanding of their language not only by their family but also those alien to their family nucleus, this has to do with the correct pronunciation.
Expressive language. This point is very important, since children will read and write, just as they speak. If the child has a problem with pronunciation and has begun the process of reading and writing, it is very possible that the child reads and writes with the flaws in the pronunciation.
Phonological awareness. It is one of the most important prerequisites and must be taken into account for the correct comprehension and acquisition of reading and writing; Phonological awareness allows us to know that words are composed of sounds, allows us to be able to separate words by syllables, all this makes up the phonological awareness. It has been shown that the vast majority of children who have problems in phonological awareness or phonological discrimination, will consequently have problems in the acquisition of reading and writing. It is very important that the adult is aware of the child, according to the recognition of the segments, the sequential sounds that form the words.
Recognition of a sound or a word through its written form. It refers to certain strokes have a name and a sound, that is, that the graphemes are formed by five (05) vowels and that the consonants will be more, depending on the language they speak. It should be understood that a graphic sign may correspond to several sounds and that a sound may correspond to several letters; All this learning allows them to understand that there are graphic signs in capital letters and others written in lowercase letters.
How does the beginning of writing occur in children?
For the beginning of writing, prerequisites are needed which are therefore:
Coordination.
Visual perception.
Eye-hand coordination.
This allows the child to correctly draw the letters, the identification of graphics that have similarities, but that change in direction or height; The important thing is that the children understand that when they are writing, they are also representing sounds.
