The Eclipse Chronicles (Are STILL Going...)

To catch up with the story, here are the first 7 installments:
Eclipse Chronicles Part I: Prelude To A Trip
The Eclipse Chronicles Part II: Day 1.25
The Eclipse Chronicles Part III: Day 1.50
The Eclipse Chronicles Part IV: Day 1.75
The Eclipse Chronicles Part V: Day 1.99 Almost There
The Eclipse Chronicles Part VI: Day 2.0 - It's Here!
The Eclipse Chronicles Part VII: Day 2.36 - The Day Goes Dark!

Meanwhile

We finally beached our canoe at a local hop-field and brewpub, further downriver. We wanted to stop for a beer, but the tasting room was having a private eclipse party, and was closed for public consumption. Large beer-less sigh [HERE]. After stretching our legs on the beach, it was time for one of us to start the LONG walk back to the car. Who would be volunteered, to wander the hot and sticky summertime roads to the waiting Subaru in the park? Robinia, HH, or yours truly.
~ From: The Eclipse Chronicles -Day 2.36

Onwards, To The End

"Those of you who DON'T want to walk for miles and miles and miles on a hot, asphalt, coal-black road in late August, in the blazing sun with no water or shade, take two steps back." I always seem to miss that particular cue. And there I was, standing all by myself in the line of volunteers.

My dad had a saying years ago, whenever we kids were caught doing something particularly dumb, based on some hair-brained notion or activity. Something to the tune of: "When they handed out brains, you thought they said trains, and you already had one." I may have that wrong in exact word, but in idea, it is rather spot on.

I was 'volunteered' to do the walk back to the car, since I didn't have a paddle, and was only adding ballast to the canoe anyway. Plus, there were no more cookies left for lazing down the river, in the coveted 'do very little of anything useful ', middle-seat lawn chair. It was decided. Along with some sage advice from my canoe compatriots..."you have the longest legs, so you'll get there faster anyway, and with more EFFICIENCY."

The dislogic die was cast. I would walk the road back to the car, and pick up my other two paddling yayhoos at a park in a local town a few miles downriver. I can no longer remember the name of the town. After all this WAS over a year ago.

The Chatoe Rogue Hops Field And Quaffing Room - Above The Beach

I wonder why it's spelled that way? Irregardless, I dropped Wilson² into his mesh bag, grabbed my day pack, and wandered up the steep hill toward the hops fields and the tasting room area, and the noisy eclipse party going on. I wasn't supposed to actually BE there, since it was a party, but I just acted like I belonged. No one asked what I and my soccer ball in a bag were up to, so it worked out just fine. We sure WANTED a beer before we set out, but that just was not to be. I soon hit the waiting back-roads of Oregon, and we launched into our walk back to the Subaru.

Without Prep, All You Have Is Possible, No-Prep Mayhem

Before we left on this trip, I queried Google and printed out maps of the local roads, to help me find my way back to our car. Parked about 3 miles away as the crow flies. I am not a crow. By actual WALKING, it was supposed to be somewhere between 5 and 6 miles. As the non-crow Human Bean walks. Along small country roads.

Roads with very few intersections, many curves and long straightaways, very little shoulder in places, and the potential for many farm dogs with bad, hacklefurd attitudes, on the look out for odd strangers with their soccer balls. I had some water, Wilson², the all-necessary snacks, and my walking shoes. Oh, and my dog pole. A really nice, long walking stick I found on the river. Figured I could use it to fend off those crazy-mad farm dogs, if need be.

Off Wilson² and I headed, in a westerly direction. On yon far horizon? No doubt-another grand adventure in the offing.

The local put-in/take-out parking lot. My canoe partners were waiting for me, and wondered where I'd been. They did not realize how far the walk was. I did.

But What About The White Cat?

The un-named town had a GIANT eclipse party in this park the night before. This is some of the leftover detritus from this huge happening. The white cat in front center-left looks really pooped. Probably from all that wild partying. Or possibly kitty's had a whole LOT of junk food from the dumpster today, and can't move. I hope the local branch of the highly literal, puss-puss gendarme don't give our feline friend any trouble, as she is NOT made of cardboard. And as I mentioned, running away fast is not an option for kitty today.

I'm Drink'n

Time For A Post-Eclipse, Beer And A Brät

The private eclipse party at the hops/tasting room was over by the time we loaded the car and headed out. So we returned to the start of my epic walk, to have a beer and a good brätwurst. And to discuss our wonderful, last two day journey over good food and frothy brew. We were all dog tired, but still wildly excited from our eclipse adventure. It had been the trip of a lifetime, and we all agreed, it was one of the best times of our short lives on this planet earth to date.

The drive home was difficult, since we were so bone-tired and beer-brät sated, but we finally made it to our houses in one piece. I patted Stinky the Cat on the head, and crashed hard into my little downy bed. Dreaming loftily of our NEXT grand eclipse adventure. In TEXAS, in the year 2024. We can hardly wait. I wonder if they have any rivers in Texas, along the line of totality? I wonder if they'll let me put a canoe on the plane? I wonder how many bags of Oreos I need to bring? I wonder...are there Pike Minnow's in Texas? I wonder, do I have to buy a separate seat for Wilson² on Southwest? There are SO many natural wonders of the world. I guess I'll just have to wait and see. And so will you, my fellow Steem-Landian's. I'm quite sure you can't wait either. Cheerio(s)

Ha! I have to say I called this one right! You must have been the most expendable logical choice LOL

Yes I would not risk a trespass with wrench wielding ornery old guys!

I was waiting for you to hit the Pacific OMG!

Oh what are the chances?!?! Only you would come upon a shoe fence in the middle of nowhere! Too cool! There has to be a good backstory to that fence!

TBH 2024 doesnt sound too far away! So, so many questions! All I can say is double up on the Oreos !!

Ha haa, yes, too slow to 'step back'. Though with 3 people, it IS a bit harder to hide. I felt like Lewis and Clark, and kept thinking I might see that grand blue expanse any moment.
I shall return to the fence, it's a veritable goldmine of dds discussion. (I can just hear the masses now, "oh lordy!") I will see if I can find the backstory there for you. Thanks for the advice too, you can never have enough cookies. Hope your night is a good one. Don't stay up past 3 ( :

Aahaahaaahahaaa!!!!! Oh boy I would love to get lost with you, it will be so fun! I always get lost, ALWAYS! I think my internal gps is broken or something!

You may just need new batteries. Though, I've never had the greatest GPS either...I just look at the map. And use a compass. I highly recommend it. It would be fun to be lost with you too. Especially on the beach. Yes...

No one gets lost in the beach! Is just water and sand! Oh, Wilson² will love a beach day!

It is an easy decision. Turn right or left, at the water. I wonder, what does a ball bring, for a beach ball?

Dearest Dear fellow DD I am so missing your posts.
At first I was ready to admonish myself as I thought, "Heavens have I forgot about dd!" BUt, no I see you have not posted in some time.

As you know I am now settling in South East England and trying to keep up with everything, which is not easy. I am determined to start setting my schedule this week with buses and trains and London time and all sorts.

I hope to see you around here again!

Hello there, and how are you these fine days? Busy as the proverbial bee, it sounds. All is well in this corner of the world. I was just very busy doing things and then off the system, traveling and such. So am now back on in one form or another. Definitely not going anywhere off the site. I DO love it here. And miss all my dear Steem friends, of which DDA is quite high on the list.

Glad you're settling in across the big pond. Sounds like such a grand adventure. One day I'd love to see the area over yon. Keep the old fingers crossed on that one. Have a grand time, and talk to you soon.

Thanks, I will look into it. Though computer savvy I is not. Kind of like my adeptality of English...

The Neverending story, Ghostbusters, Big Fish and Cast Away, haha, did I miss any movie references? That was one hell of a walk! Fun being a tag along on your misadventure :)

Ha haa, think you got them all. Maybe It's A Mad Mad Mad Mad World, though in reality, even though I complained, it was a fun adventure. Just wasn't sure if I would ever get there. Glad you enjoyed tagging along. A misadventure is always more fun with friends.

Yeah! My guess is right! You were the one who had to walk back and you had very long long long long walk indeed. I think, you made good decision for being a volunteer because you had so many exciting to see and you had good friend like Wilson with you. He was always very cute in every shots.

Ah.. the haunting house would be really scary in the evening and when you said there was something moved up there….. Oh! I bet, I will run faster than you, for sure. Ha ha…. ;0

The Hazelnut Grove are amazing, but, I'm afraid, it would be so scary at night…..

I myself like the greenery field, it looks refreshing and relaxing which would be great for you at that moment, I think.

Shoe Shot PARADISE…..right words. Beautiful shot indeed….

The sunset photos are magnificent, I do really love these.

So many questions for your next grand eclipse adventure in Texas. Yeah…I’m so excited and can’t wait either… ;0

Those shoes! I heard gossip from sources not mentioned about you and the shoe fetish thing. Or perhaps not a fetish, you just happen upon them like some lost and found department.

Oh, I can so get lost with you, unless I have a GPS. Seems I have no sense of direction, however, it has never stopped me in life. Being lost can be another adventure, know what I mean?

I am plain tuckered out from all that walking. Just tell me that we didn't go in circles. I didn't see the shoe fence again so no. Was Wilson alive and doing well when you saw him last?

Inquiring minds want to know.

Wilson² is doing very well, safely ensconced on the couch, waiting for more adventure. Thank you for asking, and he ditto's the sentiment.
As for getting seriously lost, I am not a GPS dude, more map and compass, so I'm sure we could get in a lot of trouble if we tried. I agree, WHAT FUN ( :
I wonder if doing 19.1 shoe shots actually counts as a fetish, or more of an obsession bordering on the absurd? I go with number two. Here is my first, and last, with another in the middle. As you can see, they've gotten more involved, and now I'm International. They just seem to pop up all the time on my bike rides, just BEGGING to be made famous. Though that might be a bit of a stretch. Once again, what fun!! Thanks for the always joyously enjoyable comment, hope your day is going well.

I don't often put in links, to avoid obnoxiousality, but for you, since you mentioned SOMEONE (Hmm...) said something, well, why not ( :

Oh, joy!!! Thank you for the links! I am always missing your writings, I had to check and make sure that I was following you (I am) but the way they do the feeds here truly is so outdated. Or perhaps I don't pay enough attention. Nah! I am plenty nosey for both of us. I like knowing... Well, unless it is terribly unpleasant, then, better off not knowing.

I am so glad Wilson is doing well, he deserves it after the life he has led. Give him a big hug for me. And for goodness sake, blow him up so he can sit right. How awkward to have to sit on the couch half blown up.

You are International! How exciting! I am jealous that you get so many rogue shoes while on your bike rides. When they beg, please tell me that they at least do it in French? I mean, how romantic! Some guys have all the luck. Oh, dear! Who could ever think you were trying for the obnoxious prize? Pffft! I am not sure you know how to be. I'm glad you included them! You know I want them!!

I literally have hair-raising stories of getting lost because I am a map kinda gal. I would use a compass but, if I get lost with one of those, my family would make sport of it. Go toward the ocean!! They used to say... Don't you have to know where you are to go that way? Truly. I lived with a bunch of people that have mapquest embedded in their brain. I, on the other hand, have always been directionally challenged. The only people it bothers - is everyone except for me. I am all about the adventure. :) It's either accept it, or stay home. I have some of the best adventures. LOL

As always, it is such a hoot to hear from you! I am off to check a few links!
