Wow, the same birds of a different mother. I'm pretty sure they are the same species. But not positive, and I'm too lazy to look it up. Sad. They only seem to be around the rivers here. Then again, our ocean is pretty darn wild. Not sure they'd ever get back up. Your pics are gorgeous. What lens did you use? And my first thought was, "wow, what a picture of a falcon headed down at 110 mph". Then thought, Is that a hawk? Did you take that, and was it diving or cruising? Amazing photo whatever it's doing.

Both these birds are osprey. They may be the same bird. The one in the second picture is diving for fish. The sound they make when hitting the water is pretty dramatic. Did you see your birds catch anything? It makes sense that they only live around rivers and the ocean since fish is all they eat.

I took the pictures with my el-cheapo Nikon DSLR and a 55-200 mm zoom lens.

The diving photo is pretty amazing. Nice capture. I've seen quite a few grab a fish. Amazing they can take off with them. Even saw one come back, and drag his/her feet in the water, to clean them off. Pretty cool. I've only seen them on the river, though they probably do live on the ocean. Then again, an Orca might grab them as they dive. Saw an alligator do that to an egret once. 'Zoop', from below, and it was gone. Harsh life in the wilds.
Your el cheapo, as you call it, does a nice job. Some day I hope to replace my D-200. Money, money money. Why does it always become so necessary ( :
