The Rain Forests Are Our Planet's Lungs

How will life survive if we no longer have air to breathe?

"Originally, 6 million square miles of tropical rainforest existed worldwide but as a result of deforestation, only 2.4 million square miles remain."
"At the current rate of tropical forest loss, 5–10% of tropical rainforest species will be lost per decade."
"57% of the world's forests, including most tropical forests, are located in developing countries."
-Facts via Nature.org

These alone are three staggering facts.

These developing countries hold the weight of the world's future on their backs yet they're faced with enormous debt, rising costs of living and high percentages of poverty as they attempt to modernize their economy and step into the 21st century.

It is easy to view the rainforests as a commodity, a natural resource which they can use to leverage their debts and help their economy grow but they are selling our children's futures just to make it through today.

Is it worth it?

  • Are cattle farms worth clearing hundreds of thousands of square miles of forests?
  • Is paper, which can easily be made from hemp or other resources, really worth chopping down our trees?
  • Are industrialized cities with "modern" sky rises and concrete for miles really better than living in harmony within the forests?
  • Is human expansion really more important than thousands of species of plants and animals ?

These are all questions each person should be asking themselves and each country should be taking seriously.

Yes, it's not that easy to solve but if we do not stop selling our future to make it through today we soon will have no future at all. If we keep putting a monetary value on priceless life (no matter whether plant or animal life) we will sell our souls and the soul of our Earth to the highest bidder.

In closing I hope everyone will read or watch the movie The Lorax.. yes, it's a kids book/movie but the message is one we all need to learn from. Just check out this 30 second clip ... it will break your heart </3 I know it makes me cry at least!

Its sad how little people care about things until they are gone. :(

@andykapps I know :-( but at least putting my small voice out there - and you chiming in is creating its own little ripple, who knows maybe more will join in!

So absolutely true. Again it's another thing that we're taught as kids that somewhere along the line we end up turning our back on. It is something that is completely vital to our existence, yet it doesn't seem to phase anyone as to what will happen if we don't have it or they have an 'it's not my problem' attitude.

As for the paper products and such. I am a huge advocate on using hemp. It' is such a versatile textile that can be used for so many things. Now that we have states that it's legal to grow, I would have thought we would have seen more hemp. I guess I should grow my 6 plants I'm allowed to grow and learn how to make hemp :D

Absolutely wonderful piece @amariespeaks.

thank you @tryskele I know I was thinking along the same lines with the legalization going on... that is a good idea! I want to start growing too just need a place first lol! I would buy some hemp products !! Pay in steem or any crypto lol you could start a whole new industry!

6th Place Award goes to @amariespeaks.

thank you @earthnation !! there were so many great entries - I'm proud to have made the cut! :)
