Contest Entry For @ELAmental's Earth Deeds // Saving Energy By Hang Drying Clothes

in #earthdeeds6 years ago (edited)

Earth deeds is not something that I consciously think of since what I do for Mother Earth is ingrained in who I am. It is so much a part of who I am that I had a difficult time thinking of what I do daily. @ELAmental has a great initiative to show what we are all doing to be Earth conscious and is currently holding a contest for over 100,000 UP coins. To check out the contest, click the link here.

Our judge, @ELAmental is judging this contest by the following:

The winners of this contest will be chosen NOT based on the professionalism and comprehensiveness of their entry posts, but by the intensity of their merit, and how great the Earth healing effects, or carbon footprint reduction of their #EarthDeed(s) actually is.

Eagle Spirit's Earth Deed

One of the things I do weekly to conserve energy and take care of Mother Earth is to hang dry my clothing. This not only saves my clothes from wearing out quickly but saves in so many other ways. Green America has the following to say about using a gas or electric dryer here:

Save energy and curb emissions

In many households, the dryer is the third-most energy-hungry appliance, after the refrigerator and washer. Air-drying your clothes can reduce the average household’s carbon footprint by a whopping 2,400 pounds a year.

Save Money

Not many people can afford to spend any more than necessary on energy bills, and many households pay more than $100 a year on the electricity claimed by their dryer. Most households will likely have less than a year of payback time for purchases that enable air drying.

Save time

Anyone who’s had to wait around the laundromat or delay an errand to fold clothes right when the dryer finished will appreciate the flexibility of air-drying clothes. While it may take longer for clothing to get dry, you don’t have to be present to fold them to prevent wrinkles. You can hang your laundry on the rack or line and go about your day, then come back to fold whenever you get around to it.

Save your clothes

The lint you find in your dryer is evidence of your wardrobe literally wearing away. When you stop using your dryer, you’re conserving your favorite clothes longer and saving the cost of replacing them before their time.

It’s safer

It eliminates the risk that your dryer could ever start a dangerous fire. According to a report by FEMA, clothes dryer vents can become clogged with lint, causing more than 15,000 house fires every year.

Additionally, from the same article hanging your clothes have the following benefits:

A natural option is to hang clothes out to dry outside, on a line or a rack. A clothesline enables you to spend some of your laundry time enjoying the outdoors, your clothes smell “sunny” when they come back in, and drying in the sunshine helps to naturally disinfect clothes, and to gently bleach whites.

Drying clothing indoors can also have an added perk when it helps to keep indoor winter air moist, a kind of low-tech humidifier.

Personally, I've dried my clothes on an indoor rack and outdoor line my entire life. I do not make it a habit to use a gas or electric dryer as it saves Mother Earth, my clothes, and the electric bill.

The website Tree Hugger has some very interesting facts when it comes to using a dryer here and they say:

There are upward of 88 million dryers in the U.S., each emitting more than a ton of carbon dioxide per year. Because dryers uses so much energy, skipping it altogether can make a real difference. While some homeowners' associations and municipalities oppose hanging clothes out to dry, the pro-line drying movement, headed up by Right to Dry, is putting up a good defense for your right to harvest free solar energy. Added bonus? Clothes last longer when you line dry because there's less wear and tear than when you use the dryer.

According to @ELAmental the definition of Earth Deeds is:

An Earth Deed is anything you do to reduce your carbon footprint and/or heal the planet in your every day life. This could be as simple as re-using plastic bottles and bags, and as complex as organizing massive eco-conscious projects and clean-ups. There is no Earth Deed that is too small to have an impact, and anything you do to be resourceful, and minimize waste, should be reported on to inspire others, especially if you have a Steemit account. This contest provides even more personal rewards for your eco-conscious actions, in addition to the greatest reward of all, a healthier Earth mother Gaia, our home.

So join us as we celebrate Mother Earth together and show us what you do to live an eco-conscious life. As always I love community engagement, so leave a comment below and I will be sure to respond.

Yours,

yay thank you bliss!!

Insane how much fires can be started with dryers, that I didn't know! And the carbon footprint in the US from dryers alone should be a complete turn off to using those machines.

I never liled how my clothes feel out of the dryer, though yes the warmth is nice but its just a short thing! Wasted time at the laundo-mat... lol, so true. I used to go wash my clothes and bring them home to air dry just because I couldn't stand waiting there. Here's our drying rack:

A beautiful #earthdeed @eaglespirit

wow nice photo! love the words too, thank you for that and yeah kinda looks like one of the outdoor dryers i ahd growing up. :)
thank you for your great input and message.
hugs,
eagle spirit

You're welcome and thank you. I'm back in the big city now for a few months, where space is limited but I can still use a drying rack in the bath tub.

There's a plan to hook up a washing machine to a bicycle at some point on our property. That'll be a fun project 😁.

Have a good day

Thank you for your continued support of SteemSilverGold

Thank you for such a wonderful example of how such a small lifestyle change can have a huge positive impact on the environment. I hang dry all of my organic, herbal dyed, and tie dyed garments (I even hand wash some of them). I use the dryer as infrequently as I can, and also always wait until the last possible moment, and have zero clean cloths to wear, to run a load of laundry.

funny thing is this is how i live too, inwas going to use how i wash my clothes in a different post. glad to know you live similarly.

I too hang my clothes to dry them and am happy to see you do. It always seemed more natural and of course, much less resources are used. Good entry honey! 💚

funny, more people are chiming in they do the same thing so i’m glad about that and hope more people start to do the same. :)

Awesome way to conserve energy! Keep sun/air drying. In Cameroon, more than 80% of the population wash and dry their clothes withouth machines. Laundry machines are still a luxury and i wish they understand that the luxury of Laundry machines and dryers also have a huge carbon impact. Our wish is that they should keep washing and drying by themselves

it is right?! camaroon is definitely much more evolved plus how much is it to bring a dryer there? LOL
how do you wash your clothes? by hand?
