Don't worry, It's just flying over the curvature

in #earth6 years ago

For those that think ships disappearing into the horizon means that they are sailing over the curvature of the Earth.

All you have to do to disprove this silly belief is go to the beach with your camera, and use it to zoom in on the ships you think have passed over the curved water. Somehow you see the ship come back into view when doing this! Is it magic? NO, it just means that there's no curved ocean water anywhere on Earth.

Oh! I see..... Now i understand ur outrage on my page. I just followed you to see maybe i can learn a few

No outrage, just trying to educate people on the natural and physical properties of Earth.

Also, www.ifers.123.st is a great place to start learning 'a few'

Weird, LOTS and LOTS of people get out their telescopes and the ships actually DO deisppear over the horizon! You should actually try it... oh, and use a LARGE ship whose vanishing point is BEYOND the horizon, not teeny tiny little buoys and little fishing boats whose vanishing point to the naked eye is BEFORE the horizon.

Here's one with a magical p900. Still goes over the horizon.

And here's another!

Oh, and here's what happens when a plane that is not 1000 miles wide (as yours would be to scale) actually goes over the horizon.

More ships over the horizon with a telescope. I live on a bluff overlooking a shipping channel, and I have a big powerful telescope in my living room and, guess what, when the ships (and the sun) go over the horizon, I can't bring them back with a telescope!

The flaw in your experiment is using two different sighting methods on the same object. For instance, if you trained a telescope on a ship as it sailed away and kept the telescope on the ship the whole time, you would indeed see the ship disappear bottom first. You naked eye cannot see this happening.
