Mysterious World Of The Polar Regions

in #earth6 years ago (edited)
North and South polar regions, two extremes of our world, are fascinating places that many of us dream of going. As you know, These coldest spots of the Earth are called Arctic and Antarctica. These areas, which have difficult living conditions for the living things, are made up of snow and ice-covered pieces of land that reaches a height of several meters.

Are There People Living in Antarctica?

Since Antarctica does not have the proper temperature and other conditions necessary for people's life, there are scientists who come to this area to do research only. Scientists are going to Antarctica in the summer months when the freezing temperatures are falling. This region has not been included in any country borders and has been turned into an area for research purposes only. However, tourists from various countries are also able to come to visit the region for touristic purposes in recent times.

Does the Arctic Circle Have Land Parts?

There is no visible land in the Arctic Circle , and the continent is completely covered with ice. However, there are pieces of land beneath the ice masses and covered with ice and snow, which are over a hundred meters in height under the influence of the cold weather that dominates the region for centuries. More than half of Greenland, a part of Canada, countries like Alaska and Scandinavia are in the Arctic Circle.

How Cold is Antarctica?

The temperature in the interior of Antarctica, the coldest region in the world, ranges from about -25 to -89 degrees Celsius. The lowest temperature measured so far on Earth is Vostok, Antarctica with -89.2 degrees. The thickness of the ice layers can reach up to 3 km in this region. The snow and ice masses, which are thick and dense, reflect the sun's rays back to the atmosphere and prevent the temperature increase in the region. The freezing winds can reach 145 km/h in some regions. And since the region has a dry climate, it has never rained in Antarctica for thousands of centuries.

How Animals Live in Freezer Polar Climate

Animals in the arctic region have furs that are thick enough to protect them from cold and have a thick layer of oil. In addition, most of the animals living in this area have adapted to have small ears and noses to balance body heat. While whales, penguins, sea birds and seals are nourished by fish they catch from the sea, musk oxen or other land animals often eat nutrients by eating tundra.

Well, How To Get To Antarctica For A Touristic Purpose?

Transportation to Antarctica is provided via New Zealand and Chile. It can be reached the continent in 10 hours by plane from New Zealand. However, this is directly related to the weather. If the condition of the weather is not available, it will be returned after 3 hours from the start of the flight. It is also possible to reach Antarctica in 4.5 days by sea via Chile. The ships that go there pass through the Strait of Magellan, one of the world's toughest straits.

Travel tours to Antarctica do not allow entry into the territory of the Polar Circle. Only researchers can reach the polar region with special permission. After a long voyage from Chile, only the coastal regions of the continent can be visited. A few kilometers of walking are carried out between the penguins in this region. Apart from this, contracted scientific facilities are visited by operators. [ref*]
