Jannik Sinner is an Italian tennis player. Sinner won his first ATP Challenger singles title in February and by doing so, he became the first person born in 2001 to reach a Challenger final. In October, he received a wild card into the European Open and became the youngest male tennis player in 5 years to reach the semifinal of an ATP tournament. After winning his opening match, he jumped into the top 100 for the first time in his career.

Alex de Minaur is an Australian tennis player with dual Australian and Spanish citizenship. He was born in Sydney, Australia. De Minaur has stated that he has always felt a strong bond with Australia even though he has lived most of his life in Spain. He started playing tennis at the age of three at the Sydney Private Tennis Academy. De Minaur plays tennis under the flag of Australia and made his professional debut in July 2015 at the Spain F22, reaching the quarterfinals.
