Today I will show you another interesting fact about Portugal!
The World oldest diplomatic alliance is the Anglo-Portuguese Alliance!
This alliance is commonly known as the English Alliance, between England and the Kingdom of Portugal. It’s the oldest diplomatic alliance in the world.
It was instituted by the Anglo-Portuguese Treaty in 1373, during the Middle Ages. In the Middles Age the English help to the House of Avis was the first level of a set of cooperation actions with England that would be of extreme importance in the Portuguese foreign policy for more than 500 years.
After the Restoration, the Treaty of 1642 reaffirmed the reciprocal friendship between the two kingdoms, and granted freedom of commerce to the English in the domains of Portugal. In 1661, the Treaty of Peace and Alliance between Portugal and Great Britain was signed, marking the beginning of English economic dominance over Portugal and its colonies.
Nowadays, as both countries are members of the European Union and the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO / NATO), their relations are coordinated more by such institutions than by the provisions of the various treaties that make up the entire Alliance.
