Ahh now I'm going to have to look that one up as I can't remember the story behind that one. Maybe I'll stumble over it in Herodotus somewhere if I can concentrate enough to get through that. I thought I rambled way off tangent and incoherently until I started reading these antiquated authors XD
So we all know I'm a bit of a sucker for swirls, and what I think is particularly cool in this piece is the reflected swirls in the cornucopia and the sash. Gaia (along with other goddesses associated with food/harvests) does normally get associated with the cornucopia anyway for the exact reasons you've stated, so you're probably as right as you're going to get with these things ;D
Yep the legend is either Zeus wrangled the horn from his god mother goat (maybe like a very nurturing upgoat lol) because he's too strong as a baby or Hercules fighting some horned god.
