Is it cruel to own a pet?
What is your opinion on owning pets? Is this a cruel practice where humans enslave animals? Is it OK for some animal types and not for others? What is your opinion?

Dogs in gardens or on farms seem to be happy if the owner is taking care of them. I think they need space, and they need another dog or dogs to live with or meet frequently. Nobody should be alone.
My dog Xander (the pug in the photo). He hates other dogs. He only likes humans and cats. I have a cat as well 😂
But anyway, he does like going to one of the local parks and I walk him random directions around near where I live. He does go out in my garden sometimes, but he doesn't spend long out there, he always runs back inside.
But if you have a dog and no garden, like if you live in an apartment, you need to make sure they get outside time.
All dogs seem to be different. And all humans, too!

From my understanding, house-cats & house-dogs were breed and domesticated to be pets, so I don't think we're fucking with their instinctual behaviors anymore.
However, let's say someone owns a bear. Well, I doubt that bear really wants to be kept in a fuckin' home all day, right? It probably wants to... I don't know, do bear things. Like... run or scratch some shit or something... catch some fish? I don't know, point is: "Normal" pets are probably fine [ as long as you love and care for them ], wild animals probably not so much.

Personally I think this really depends on if you can create a natural environment for them. Which in some cases could be very expensive or even impossible. While domesticated breeds of cats and dogs love living in human environments as long as they are fed and treated well.

Some animals are great companions and as long as they are happy it shouldn't matter. Humans can do wonders to keep an animal happy :)

Too many pets in my garden can be bad.
I'm just a pumpkin, but not everything in the garden wants pee pee on it. I can cope most of time. The strawberries get really pissed err... frustrated.
Pet raccoons and rats are scary, but I know they are not as bad as the wild ones that do that most damage.
Do people keep mores and gofers as pets? Don't answer that. I'm starting to think of my garden and that deviates from your question.
Pet raccoons, is that common? We don't have them in the UK.
