It seem impossible, but someone abandoned these two
Is there anything that is cuter that baby animals? I have a hard time relating to anyone whose heart doesn't just melt when they see the poor helpless creatures and I feel a sense of rather extreme anger or even pity when it comes to our attention that dogs have been just left behind to fend for themselves when they are completely incapable of doing so on their own. Lucky for these two they have their friends at Krabi Animal Welfare to lend a helping paw.
Like a lot of unwanted dogs these two were dropped at a temple in the night as the previous care-givers couldn't be bothered with raising them or at least giving them a shot at life. I suppose it could be worse, the human drop-offers could have just dropped them somewhere where they wouldn't be found and would almost certainly die.
We don't know exactly how old they are but according to a veterinarian they are roughly 6 weeks old and it appears as though during all of that time they have had very little in the way of any sort of care. Perhaps they were abandoned by their mother or the mother was killed after they were born but when we found them they were already really sick... but not to worry because they are on the mend and we are almost completely certain that they are going to survive.
When animals this young are dropped off at temples it is more difficult than if an adult dog is dropped off because pups this young have almost zero survival skills and they are not at all prepared for the rigors of competing for food or even finding a safe place to lie down. The temple areas that we look after are considerably safer than the outside world but there still exists a hierarchy of sorts where the stronger dogs tend to establish dominance, as is their nature.
Until they can be slowly introduced to the pack safely, they have to remain separated from the rest of the group and will only be take for "meet and greets" when the situation can be monitored by a human that will ensure that they are not going to be mauled by the other dogs. Even though the dogs that we look after at temples tend to be better behaved and kinder than their proper street dog counterparts, they still maintain a level of leadership that can result in nips and growls that the puppies are not yet familiar with.
For the time being these siblings just stay near one another and will occasionally play with one of the human caregivers. We know that in time they will be accepted by the rest of the inhabitants provided that there is enough food to keep everyone's emotions in check. This is something that we focus on rather heavily at these places because even friendly dogs can become quite vicious when it comes to getting food in their bellies.
Thankfully, the monks at the Tiger Cave Temple and others are very willing to lend a helping hand in these situations and we are quite confident that the siblings will be safe and looked after until they can find their legs and understand how their new lives work.
The good news is that we are noticing a dramatic uptick in the amount of visitors to the area, and our donation numbers are increasing ever since Thailand eased all restrictions as far as tourism is concerned. We have even seen an increase in the amount of volunteer requests that we are receiving. With any luck we will be back operating at pre-Covid levels by the end of the year.
