Cancer doggie update

in #dogs4 years ago

While we have not named him and most people just call him "good boy" or "sweetie," the street dog with cancer is progressing nicely and we have raised more than half of the funds that are necessary to compete his treatment.

We picked this guy up at the beginning of January because we noticed a lump on his face that was impeding his ability to eat. He was immediately friendly and this was a plus. But our worst fears were realized when we were told by the fantastic veterinarians at Bangkok Animal Hospital that "good boy" has multiple bouts of cancer. Even though I have spent the past few years dedicating my time to this foundation, I know that this is extremely rare in younger dogs.

The infection in his face had to be drained and while he didn't like the process as it was taking place, he was compliant and didn't attempt to bite. It was then that we were informed that the infection was cancerous and would simply return in time if we didn't perform chemotherapy. This process has a similar effect on dogs that it does on humans including loss of appetite and nausea. Also, just like in humans there is no guarantee that the chemo will have a lasting impact.

But "good boy" was such a sweetheart that even though we don't really have the finances for this that we decided to go forward with it anyway. I am sure any animal lovers out there can relate to how tough a decision this was for us because we were very aware of the fact that if we chose not to perform the operation / chemo, that this sweet fella will certainly die in a horrible manner.

As you can see in the pictures, the swelling has gone down dramatically, and he is just as kind and calm as can be. It is a bit hearbreaking because he reacts so naturally to affection although from what we have noticed on the streets, he didn't receive much of it there.

With any luck (and of course a bit of work by our fundraisers in Thailand and the U.K.) we will soon have the necessary amount of funds to complete his treatment and then begin the work on finding him a forever home somewhere in the world.

I once again want to state that we are so grateful that the Bangkok Animal Hospital does all of their work for us for free and medications are provided at cost. We couldn't do it without this generosity.

I want to help you guys out. I presume methods of donating are on the website? I'll go have a look.

I remember from the time that I spent down your way that the stray dog problem is really bad there. I don't know why that doesn't appear to be the case up here in Chiang Mai but I would be willing to bet that it is likely from more traffic rather than more organizations like yours.

yes, all that information as well as multiple methods of helping out is all at the main website at http://krabianimalwelfare.org/ Thanks for your help!
