Back to the temples to check on the dogs!

in #dogs3 years ago

We try to stay involved with several temples in the Krabi region because we have more control over the situation there since the monks will stay in touch with us and they are there to let us know if anything starts to go wrong. Temples are an important place as far as animal control is concerned in this country that has no actual animal control.

It is customary in Thailand to drop off unwanted animals at temples and the monks will look after the animals as well as they can. In exchange you are meant to continue to donate to the same temple. Whether or not the people who drop off the animals actually end up doing this or not we can't possibly know. I hope so, but honestly, I doubt it.

This week saw us back at Po Riang Temple to drop off food and get updates from the monks about any new arrivals and then check the skin condition of the animals we have already treated and also treat new animals if necessary. We also will ask if there are any new females because due to limited funds, these are the only dogs we are currently sterilizing to limit population growth not to mention the plethora of problems that can occur inside of an unsterilized and homeless female.

There were a few new faces in the mix here at Po Riang, but not too many and this is a good thing. The monk is actually a lot more friendly than he appears in the above photo and the information that he and others give to us is instrumental in our cause because since we are all over the place, the residents at the temple are much more aware of the comings and goings of the dogs, since they feed them on a daily basis. Thankfully, there are no major issues as far as the health of the pack here is concerned but there were some parasite and skin conditions that needed to be treated. Thankfully, this is handled very easily by a delicious edible medication that almost all dogs seem to love. No more hiding of tablets inside of some meat because the medication itself is something that they really seem to enjoy.

We wish we could help a lot more temples than we do, but our resources are already stretched very thin so unfortunately we have to be quite choosy about who we are going to help and where. We are just happy that our programs at this and a few other temples do seem to be working. The overall health of the dogs is much better than outside the temple and the population has not been growing exponentially either. So this is a great success in our book.

Of course we also pass around some "sweeties" to the dogs that don't have any problems with their health just because... why not?

As always I want to encourage everyone to adopt not shop for pets and to donate your time, money, or both to your local animal shelter or animal-rescue operation. Even if it is just a little bit, every little bit counts more than you know.
