Yesterday was my 4 weeks straight doing daily writing #ulog posts, there had been days where it was difficult to find something interesting to write about but I managed to come up with ideas. Today, I'm making a DLive video for a contest by @ulog (Terry aka @surpassinggoogle).

I thought I'd integrate the contest entry into an actual #ulog daily post and share with you a morning in the backyard, feeding the worms and black soldier fly larvae, checking the lettuce tree and harvesting some homegrown ginger rhizomes.

This is also my first ULOG in video, can we call it a VULOG (read View-LOG) ?! hahaha 😄 As #ulog is a whole new concept, we can start inventing new derivated words for it heh. I should have thought of that and said it in the video... 🤣Feel free to use it if you think it's a cool word.

Anyway, back to the topic. This morning, I took the kitchen scraps to go feed the worms and black soldier fly larvae. Eventhough it is winter and the cold has slowed them down a lot, they are still alive and feeding. Adding a little bit more food waste than usual will generate more heat to keep them comfortable. Just don't expect them to eat as fast as in warmer days.

Later on, I noticed the ginger plant were wilted, it's time to harvest the rhizomes. After digging, pulling and washing, here is today's harvest:

Harvesting homegrown ginger

I took that inside and washed some more. My wife will preserve them in a sugary mix and we can keep them for long time and consume them as we go. This would be more for making ginger tea, a healthy snack or when you have cough and sore throat.

The Video

I recorded the video with an iPhone 8 Plus. The built-in microphone works OK but it's not ideal. So I recently invested into a Zoom iQ6 Lightning stereo field microphone and I added a deadcat which is just a fancy name for microphone windshield. What it does is prevent the wind from reaching the microphone and make horrible wind noise.

The photo below is of my work iPhone 6S (I'm using my phone to tkke the picture) with the Zoom iQ6 microphone attached to it. The hairy and fluffy fluorescent green is the deadcat:

This is the deadcat attached to the microphone:

Hopefully, the sound will be clear and clean of wind noise. The other great thing about this microphone is that it is recording in Stereo that means you might hear my voice going from left to right as I move myself sideways, the surrounding sounds would also sound more natural and submersive, I think...

Contest Summary

No losers as every participant wins something.

Since you will be posting from DLIVE, make sure you use #ulog and #ulog-dlive #ulog-noedits as three of your tags.
Simply do a short playful/creative video of you or (your avatar, puppet, animation, mask, matrix shades etc if you are a private figure) of you saying any of the variation of the words "ULOG, ULOGS, ULOGGING, ULOGGER, ULOGGEOGRAPHER, ULOGGEOLOGIST, ULOGGIST etc within your own sentences, without pronouncing the sound from the letter "U".

So instead of the sound "YOULOG or U-LOG", playfully try to pronounce it as a whole word like you would with vlog or blog. Hahaha so maybe you will sound like this: "I love YLOG like crazy!"

Those are some really huge ginger roots!!! The Aloe you have there looks extremely healthy! You are killing it! We need solider flies. We used to have them but our soil was not as optimum for them until this year and they die off easily in the winter time here, probably because they are not native.

However, in our second year our worm population has exploded and we have a lot of natural native beneficial insects now! Even the native sw desert bee, black hornets, wasps and bumble bees even!

We had a epic fly out break last year. Our knf game was not as strong as it is now and with our soil not kicking like it is now they were primed to take off! Having the wing predators has been very welcoming as our fly populations has been way down from last year because they love to eat their larve and eggs apparently.

I saw your spam tool! It seems promising and I'll have to check it out!

Oh yeah have you tried Korean natural farming yet?

Oh yea the Aloe, they travelled by car all the way from Queensland from my Aunt’s garden and they liked it here too. We’ve been eating them few times. BSF die off in winter, that’s normal, the pupae should be wintering down in the ground until spring. If you believe it is too cold for them, keep couple of handfuls of them (black ones) in a container full of dirt some where cold but above freezing (garage for example). Then mid spring you can leave the container in a shaded area of the garden, the fly will emerge and repopulate the local area.

Bees are coming back to my garden too. I spotted few solitaries bees (blue handed bees). They are great helpers for the garden.

If you manage to get a good colony of BSFL going, they will help control the other fly population too. Other flies will be attracted to the BSFL bin but he BSFL are aggressive food competitors and other fly larvae will starve.

I haven’t fully started doing KNF yet. I’ve only tried to make FAA that I need to filter out and start using coming Spring. I usually take ideas, tips and advices from here and there and apply what ever makes sense to me, a little bit like Jeet Kune Do martial art philosophy applied to gardening: learn many styles, keep what works for you, ignore what does not.

Filter the fish? Hmmm. I was not taught anything about filtering the fish... If done properly (equal weights sugar to equal weights fish) the entire ferment will be all liquid even the bones. 3-6 month ferment. An old basic plastic ice chest cooler out of the sun in temps of 70-80° is preferred. The indigenous micro-organism(imo1-5) process is the most beneficial part of knf.

Even the bones? My FAA is probably at a year of age now, that’s be great if I didn’t have to do extra to it. How do you use it? I was planning to add it to my Aerated compost tea ingredients

I haven’t started doing IMO. I regularly mulch/woodchip/horse manure the garden and every time I scratch around I can see white mycelium very similar to ones you collect to make IMO 1. And mushrooms are popping out regularly too.

Awesome! Yeah if you do add the F.A.A. just add it at the very end of your brew. The imo process has something called liquid IMO (tea). You can use IMO 2 but IMO 4 is prefered. You know there was a guy from Australia that took the Knf class in Idaho with me last year... Btw knf is a foliar program, the IMO process is the soil conditioning part which is arguably the most important part!

With F.A.A. if done right you can use 2 tbls/ 1oz per gallon. Check out the https://theunconventionalfarmer.com for another rabbit hole... I love the fish hydro recipe Gil has there...

I rewatched you say horse shit like 7 times. LOL , Very nice.

Really enjoyed this one. Like the CFT worm bin it was a nice build.

Are you also into vermicomposting?

One of my accounts is liberyworms. I have wanted to do resteems for awhile but I don't like clogging my own blog up with resteems so when someone goes to mine all they see is other peoples articles so I delegated out a little SP for this account and came up with the contest for my next day post. Great video you will need a pickaxe for the ginger if it gets any bigger.

oh I see. I did think of having multiple accounts when I joined, cuz that was how I used to do on Twitter, one for photo, one for worms, one for coding. But in the end there is always one account that posts nothing for a while and managing accounts was not fun. So I decided to do all in one and see. I wish Steemit could have a filter option so you can get to one's blog and just see topic you are interested in.

My problem with tools, is I need to buy 10 of each so I can spread them all around the house so I can always find one somewhere 🤣🤣🤣

I have the same problem. This being a resteem account and not posting a lot of content should not take to much time so I will still be doing my post on liberyworms but yes you are absolutely right about a filter option. Great idea.

I decided to feature this ULOG in my AhabResteems resteem challenge as 2nd place. You will receive 30% of SBD after payout.
