How many of you when you were kids (and I'm probably revealing my age) remember going to your local arcade and playing BattleTech. This first-ever in Virtual Reality simulated arcade game where players would select from a list of available mechs, physically get into PODs as if they were mounting an actual mech, and battle it out 6vs6 or any combination of team vs team in order to come out victorious.

I can remember spending days at the arcade with a group of friends competing against other kids and adults for bragging rights. After each match watching the 3rd person replays and getting a printout of all damage done and taken and finding out who came out as the top ranking team and player.

This was the game of all games. While inside the PODs, it was like actually being in the pilot seat of one of these huge mechs. You could feel all the bumps and hits taken and immerse yourself in the battle as if you were actually sitting in the cockpit of your chosen mech on the battlefield.

To date, I haven't found any virtual reality game that I liked as much as this one, and the experience of piloting one of these huge war machines is an unforgettable experience.

Gameplay and coming out ahead relied on skill, tactics, and teamwork. The perfectly balanced team made up of mechs with various configurations, button assignments for weapons to control heat usage, and carefully coordinated attacks determined who came out as victorious. It wasn't about running up to other mechs and just unloading your arsenal of firepower on them.

I remember spending time with friends practicing our attacks, learning the various and vast landscapes, tweaking button assignments, and practicing battlefield tactics and assignments for hours just to make sure we weren't wiped out in the first few seconds of gameplay. This was serious business in my childhood days. Learning the mechs weaknesses was also key and often involved taking out legs, obliterating torso's, and aiming right for the cockpit in order to eliminate the enemy quickly and effortlessly.

I was recently on Steam and found a game very similar to BattleTech. Nowadays with the advancement of technology, it is not as easy to find an arcade that has one of these battle systems, so many people have created their own configurations at home.

War Robots is very similar in gameplay and seemed like a fun game to try and brings the arcade fun home - best of all it's Free. Join me as I jump back into the virtual world of Mech fighting (without the Pod) and let's see how it compares to the original BattleTech.
