Richard Stallman, a GNU development initiator in 1983 and a man who devoted all of his public appearances to the development and promotion of free software, has stepped down as chairman and board member of the Free Software Foundation (which he founded in 1985) and from his position in the laboratory CSAIL (Computer Science and Artificial Intelligence) operating within the MIT (Massachusetts Institute of Technology).

The resignation is the result of a number of public calls for it after Stallman tried in a letter to defend science colleague Marvin Minsky, who allegedly sexually assaulted one of the victims of the notorious Jeffrey Epstein.
