Yoga and Meditation Helps Depression Patients

New research suggests yoga and meditation can be used as an alternative or a complimentary therapy to treat people suffering from depression including those suffering from the tough-to-treat depression.  It is found to be helpful for depression patients not on antidepressants and on those dependent on antidepressants but haven't been able to resolve their symptoms completely. 

Dr. Alan Manevitz, a clinical psychiatrist at Lenox Hill Hospital in New York City, who reviewed the research findings said yoga may also reduce immune system chemicals that can worsen depression. He added that mindful meditation has a much more beneficial effect on central nervous system. 

In a rigorous study involving 30 patients with major depression disorders divided into two groups and subjected to 2 and 3 weekly sessions of 90 minutes of Iyengar Yoga supplemented by home practice, the researchers found both groups had significant reductions in their depression symptoms. The 'high dose' group did better though and had fewer depression symptoms than the 'low dose' group.
