In this opinion piece,  Daniel Newman, describes the differences between descriptive analytics, predictive analytics and prescriptive analytics.

He then goes on to reason why prescriptive analytics would become the most important of the three as it would improve efficiencies, optimize performance and generally make marketing easier.

He also points out that not all organizations would require prescriptive analytics and what is needed would very much depend on what the organization wants to achieve. It goes without saying that in a competitive marketplace, prescriptive analytics would certainly be the most sought after tool.
