Winter Update: Patio Enclosure Floor Upgrade + GT Sled Track Layout
I recently enclosed the cabin patio for protection from wind, rain, and snow - Cabin Patio Upgrade: Framed an Enclosure for Additional Comfort. It has stood strong against wind. There were no leaks in the roof when it would rain, but the bare ground floor would get muddy, so I've added a wood pallet floor.
Testing the Enclosure with 2 Inches of Snow Fall
A couple days ago we received our first lasting snow fall of the season. In the picture below you can see the cabin patio enclosure with the snow covered roof. It's so cozy inside the unheated enclosure when you hear the wind howling outside.
Cabin Patio Enclosure: Wood Pallet Floor Upgrade
The patio enclosure bare ground floor would get annoyingly muddy every time it would rain. I've added a temporary wood pallet floor. A large sheet of heavy duty plastic vapor barrier was laid down on the ground first - to prevent the pallets from absorbing moisture from the ground.
The temporary floor is made from two large wood pallets with many of the gaps filled in - there are a few more to go. I made a couple small pallets with 2x4s and 1x6s to fill in the floor on the left side of the enclosure - see the first picture below. Slim wood shims were added, where needed, to level the pallets where they met. The pallet floor has been excellent for staying out of the mud. Along with the plastic sheeting, it has removed drafts from under the frame. This winter the wood pallet floor for the cabin patio enclosure keeps our feet off the frozen ground.

The Cabin Downhill Sled Tracks
One of the few redeeming qualities of snow is going sledding. I don't sled much myself, but my little guy enjoys his GT Racer Sled with steering wheel action and foot pushed braking system.

You can see the google map image below with the cabin sled tracks laid out. The black diamond run is the tallest of the three sled tracks - followed by the yellow s-curve track and the beginner orange track. Winter fun for the little one :)

The patio enclosure floor has been upgraded, the firewood has been stacked, and the sled runs have been spectated. I'm looking forward to a relaxing indoor winter - tinkering, podcasting, blogging on Steemit, and making plans for the spring.

Excellent idea with the pallets, truly a great way to keep everything mud and draft free. Those are incredible snow hills, I can't believe how fast he was traveling through those trees...a brave little guy! :)
I admit I doubled the speed on the sled run GIFs so they would be smaller in size (he's actually going half the speed :) It will be a much more relaxing winter with the enclosure and floor to walk out onto from the cabin :)
Love the floor upgrade, creative way to have a raised floor and keep feet dry. Raised floor should be a little warmer too I think. Love the sled hill videos. There was an awesome sled hill in the neighborhood we lived in when my boys were little.
Thanks - the floor makes it feel that much more of a part of the living space. Last winter I had a lean-to type tarp setup - constant breeze - this enclosure is a delight in comparison :) The little guy loves sledding, it seems like he's outside more now than he was in the summer.
What a creative way to use pallets for the raised floor
Thanks - they work perfect and were easy to install. I had been trying to decide if I wanted to put a floor in there, and had just cleared insulation off the pallets and the light bulb went off :)
I'm sure those pallets will make a big difference in the patio.
I'd like to try those sled runs! LOL
Those pallets really came in handy, so nice, it feels like i'm walking out onto a deck. The sled hills had just enough freeze to them - nice and fast :)

To be honest, it looks mediocre. I'm not sure you're happy with the result if you have any taste and idea of beautiful. Nowadays, there are companies and firms that provide cool solutions for enclosing a porch and it doesn't cost too much to afford and make your home prettier. I advise you to take a closer look, in short.
