DIY Woodworking - Making a Serving Dish - Big Island of Hawaii

We found this big Ohia log and we thought we would try to make a service dish from a slice. The problem was how were we going to cut a slice off of it. We started with our Chain Saw but that was so slow going as the wood was dried and hard. Then we tried out Reciprocating Saw with a long wood blade. That was cutting way better. After two days of cutting and taking breaks to do other things we got a slab off.

We used the Planar to flatten it but there were a lot of cracks as it was the end piece. We filled the cracks with resin and after it was hard we started to use the Electric Grinder to shape the piece.

After we got the rough shape we filled in a few tiny holes with epoxy and are leaving to dry to finish off today.
