Question: How much of the land on Earth is covered by humans

in #discussion6 years ago

Answer: Approximately 10%.
..................................................................................................................................................................................

47 PERCENT of the US where NOBODY lives

Half the planet's population lives on just 1% of its land

About 71 percent of the Earth's surface is water-covered,

Reality
carries as many people (in luxury) as live in the COUNTY that my son lives in.

I don't see a problem here..

@everittdmickey this is an interesting calculation. But the problem is whether the other 90% of the land is habitable for people in the same way the 10% of the land is providing for human right now?
Humans need food, water and oil (or other forms of energy) to survive. Is the other 90% of the land going to provide these resources?
The fact is that the human population cannot keep on doubling. For example in the year 1960 there were 3 billion on this planet and in year 2000 there were 6 billion. Today there are 7.5 billion people on the planet. So in just 40 years the world population doubled. What made this possible? Well, in part, it was due to improved agriculture methods and the development of superior crops by plant geneticists so we could feed the growing human population. This time (1960-2000) is also know as the green revolution in agriculture. Genetics is powerful, and scientist can develop even better foods with higher yields using less resources. But genetics and science can only do so much, and I am in favour of using science and technology to help humankind. But the harsh reality is called exponential growth.

World population growth rates between 1950–2050
you were saying?
exponential growth isn't happening.

@everittdmickey thanks for the upvote even though we might disagree ;). We need to look at the big picture. History shows that the world population has grown exponentially. I don’t think you can deny this. This graph is from the same source where Wikipedia got your graph.
total world population from diferent sources.png

Yes if we focus on last 5 decades we do see the annual rate of population growth has been decreasing since 1962.

When a population grows beyond the habitat’s carrying capacity, it has to reduce population and can lead to population crash and even extinction.

Your graph shows that we might be in that point of a population crash.
I see that you have stated another post on this topic so if you don't mind I will also post this reply in your other blog.
Cheers!

The potential is endless. Personally I don't consider an earthquake area to be 'inhabitable' but people live there as well.

does the 'ring of fire' ring any bells?
the entire pacific shoreline?

Plenty of land out there! Not saying we can't use it more efficiently though!

Wow amazing
I just can't believe this thank for the information

Great caculation...... learning...... thanks
@everittdmickey

If we all stood next to each other all humans could fit on Hawaii.
