America was founded (partialy) by socialists. The Mayflower compact makes interesting reading. It can be interpreted to say "from each according to their ability to each according to their need."
Odd thing was that half of them starved in the first two years. Then they changed over to private property ownership and oddly enough they had plenty to eat from that day forward. They thrived.
Oddly enough Venezuala was a well to do capitalist country a couple of decades ago. ONe of the richest in South America. They adopted socialism under Chavez...the rest is history.
