Did you know birds need gravity to swallow?
Birds need gravity to swallow because they do not have a strong muscular contraction in their esophagus to push food down. Instead, they rely on gravity to help move food down their throat. When they swallow, they tilt their head back so that the food can fall down their throat. In microgravity, there is no gravity to help move the food down, so birds have difficulty swallowing.
This is why birds cannot be brought into space without special accommodations. In order for birds to swallow in space, they need to be placed in a special harness that allows them to tilt their head back. This allows the food to fall down their throat and be swallowed.
