Das Rotbraune Wiesenvögelchen ist ein Tagfalter aus der Familie der Edelfalter (Nymphalidae). Es fliegt auf Magerrasen, aber auch feuchte nährstoffreiche Wiesen werden besiedelt. Der Falter legt seine Eier an Gräser ab. Die Raupe ernährt sich von unterschiedlichen Gräsern und überwintert nach der dritten Häutung. Der Schmetterling besucht sehr gerne Oregano und Thymian, an denen er saugt. Der kleine Falter fliegt in einer Generation von Juni bis Ende Juli. Sein Flug ist nicht sehr schnell und gleicht einem Hüpfen über die Wiese. Während die Bestände in Österreich noch gut sind, ist der Falter in Deutschland stark rückläufig. Habitatsverlust, starke Düngung und zu häufige Mahd, gelten als Ursache für den Rückgang.
The Chestnut heath is a butterfly of the family of Nymphalidae. It flies on meagre grasslands, but also fights nutrient-rich meadows are colonized. The butterfly lays its eggs on grasses. The caterpillar feeds on different grasses and hibernates after its third moulting. The butterfly likes to visit oregano and thyme where it sucks. The small butterfly flies in a generation from June to the end of July. Its flight is not very fast and resembles a hopping over the meadow. While the populations in Austria are still good, the butterfly is strongly declining in Germany. Loss of habitat, strong fertilization and too frequent mowing are regarded as the cause of the decline.
