RoBoSculpt: the first robotic surgeon who can make skull trepanation

in #destasteem6 years ago

For surgery in the brain, you need to access it, and for this, its logical, you need to make some holes in the skull. This requires higher accuracy and accuracy, which neurosurgeons can not handle. But more recently, scientists from Eindhoven University of Technology have created robots that can perform similar manipulations on skulls with remarkable accuracy.

It seems that the hard thing is to "drill a hole in the skull"? But it all depends on the area of operation. The fact that the skull contains a very fragile structure: the inner ear receptor nerves and other anatomical structures that can not touch under any circumstances, and during debris debris can hurt them, and the ability of blood to blur the endoscopic image.

A new robotic surgeon named RoBoSculpt, and, according to the creators, in the next five years, he will be ready to perform surgery on a man. RoBoSculpt itself is a rather advanced manipulator with a surgical drill. The surgeon-operator must determine the access area on the CT scan, after which the robot will do all the work. The manipulator itself has 7 axes, and thanks to this you can select almost any angle for manipulation. The first technical test has been successful, and the first clinical test will begin in 2018.

It should be noted that the robot can not directly operate the brain. Because the body must be repaired for manipulation, and extreme tenderness of the brain tissue is not possible to do. Therefore, a non-working neurosurgeon will not survive either.
