DD14 Ends June 3rd

This is a reminder to get your dig-on and submissions in for DD14. Dealing with the FBI vault can be a little frustrating as the website isn't very user friendly. Unless you know precisely what you're looking it can be difficult to find the proper search terms that will being up material of interest. The website also tends to highlight famous individuals rather than significant investigations.

To date, community members @v4vapid and @krnel have made some worthy contributions.

You can check them out using these links.

Recent FBI Releases

A very recent FBI release in relation to the Argentina Dirty War containing some 47,000 documents from various government agencies was made public in April of 2019.

There was also the recent disclosure about the "Dancing Israelis" that we've yet to see a submission on.

Hope this helps anyone who has been struggling to find material on the official website.

As always, be safe out there and happy digging!

Deep Dives 14

Welcome back to another edition of Deep Dives Research Challenge. This time round we transition from the Wikileaks archive to the online archive of the Federal Bureau of Investigation.

The FBI Vault

Online access to the FBI Vault was made available in 2011. At the time, there were approximately 2,000 government documents open to the general public. Seven years on, the Vault media archive has expanded to approximately 6,700 files. The website offers users the ability to search key words, topics and persons and also provides a built-in document viewer for convenience.

Included here are many new FBI files that have been released to the public but never added to this website; dozens of records previously posted on our site but removed as requests diminished; files from our previous FOIA Library, and new, previously unreleased files.

Vault.FBI.gov

Appearing in the Vault electronic reading room collection are a plethora of familiar names and notable personalities.

Featuring searchable dossiers on characters as wide-ranging as Al Capone, Marilyn Monroe, Notorious B.I.G. and the 9/11 hijackers...

"The new website significantly increases the number of available FBI files, enhances the speed at which the files can be accessed, and contains a robust search capability," David Hardy, chief of the FBI's Records Management Division, said in a statement. "It reflects a strong commitment to build public trust and confidence through greater public access to FBI records."

The Vault also has an alphabetical index that can be quite useful to researchers. The FBI also maintains a Twitter page that posts up-to-date news and developments.

Thanks for the reminder @deepdives ... I was planning to participate with an entry for this challenge.

I'll also help with re-posting this reminder, or write a separate post as an endorsement to the project, in order to get more eyes upon it, and hopefully, more participation.

Thanks @angryman! You're help is always appreciated :)
