Day 85 - 100 days of value challenge!

There's been a lot of hype around the FaceApp application lately, as well as controversy. So I thought I'd put in my two cents on the matter.

First of all, I totally agree with the criticism of the privacy policy this company operates. It should be a simpler policy, more concrete, it should outline exactly what our data will be used for, why, to whom and for how long.

With that being said, I think it's important to bear in mind and understand the fact that these terms are not that different from the ones being used by Facebook, Instagram, Snapchat, Google, you name it.

The main difference with FaceApp as I've understood is that it is a lot more vague in its description of the usage and sharing of our data, in addition to demanding lifetime royalty-free access to photos. And of course, the fact that the company is stationed in Russia.

And the last part is maybe more important than one should think.

I don't want to become a tinfoil hat conspiracy theorist, but isn't it odd how western media go crazy about this russian privacy abusive application, when we have several American privacy abusive applications that we often ignore? Yes, Facebook got a round in the senate, and we're seeing progress made in peoples realizations of what these companies do to us, but there's still a long way to go.

I get the same vibes here as I got with the Huawei period where the US claimed them to be spying.

Believe that. US, with their NSA, CIA, Google, Facebook, Amazon, Cambridge Analytica scandal, Snowden, Julian Assange with wikileaks and so forth. They of all countries have the guts to call out people for exploiting data and privacy?

I don't want to get too political here, but in these days I believe it's crucial for everyone to practice critical thinking to the best of their abilities. Don't just buy everything you read in the news. Most Norwegian newspapers pick up international stories and then they go viral here. And the integrity of journalism these days isn't too much to brag about.

One fantastic thing that has come out of all of this is that people are finally starting to read the terms they're accepting all the time!
