Following the success of Decentralized 2017, University of Nicosia presents Decentralized 2018 as the main sponsor of the event. This will be a 3 days summit that will take place on 14th to 16th November in the Divani Caravel, Athens, Greece.

University of Nicosia is the largest university in Cyprus, and it has its main branch situated in Nicosia. It is the first university in the world to offer a Master’s degree in digital currency and it is also the first university to issue academic certificates onto the bitcoin blockchain.

University of Nicosia also accepts tuition payments in Bitcoin.

You can find more about University of Nicosia here.

Decentralized 2018 anticipates having over 1000 attendees from 50 different countries, over 30 media partners, over 20 exhibitions and more than 70 keynote speakers who are experts in the crypto universe and CEOs of various life-changing projects.

Decentralized 2018 is expected to be one of the greatest conferences in the world. There will be different keynote speakers who are blockchain enthusiasts and experts in cryptocurrency. There will be panel discussions and a variety of topics covered. Some of the topics include; advancement of blockchain technology, the current state of cryptocurrencies, industries set to be disrupted by blockchain technology, among others.

Some of the keynote speakers include; Jameson Lopp (Infrastructure Engineer at Casa), Garrick Hileman (Head of Research at Blockchain.com), Eva Kaili (Member of European Parliament), Susanne Tarkowski (Founder at Bitnation), Matt Starkey (CEO at Oracle-D), Peter Rizun (Chief Scientist at Bitcoin Unlimited), Roger Ver (CEO at Bitcoin.com), among others.

The sponsors of this event include; Consensys, Shipchain, Bitcoin.com, Microsoft, PumaPay, among others.

Below is a review of industries set to be disrupted by blockchain technology.

Banking.

Supposing you are in the Australia and you want to send money to your friend. Now for this transaction to occur, you need the help of a central authority which is the bank; for instance, you're sending them $100. So out of this $100, $10 goes as a transaction fee to the bank and the rest goes to your friends which is $90. This transaction fee at times can be expensive and time-consuming. Blockchain is disrupting the system by providing a peer-to-peer payment system which provides high security and doesn't cost much. This eliminates the need of a central authority. It provides a borderless, fast and cheap payment all over the world. Blockchain records all the transactions in a decentralized ledger which is publicly accessible by its users.

Cybersecurity.

Imagine you're in an office one day and you find out that your data has been modified or the previous evening someone went through your data and altered it. Cyber attacks are a huge concern among the public; that is to say, it can have huge repercussion to a person’s life. So it is essential that we find an effective solution against people going through our data unauthorized. Blockchain with its decentralized system makes it suitable for the environment with a lot of security required. All the information that is stored in the bitcoin network is encrypted and verified. This ensures that there is no single point of entrance for attacks and it is also easy to identify malicious attacks through the peer-to-peer connections where data is not altered.

Healthcare.

Say you're in the hospital and you’re asking for reports for the medical tests you did yesterday. The receptionist tells you to wait and even after 5 hours, you still don't get your report. Anyone who has access to the system can corrupt the data since the information is stored in the physical memory of the system. Blockchain eliminates a central authority and ensures that you have rapid access to data; that is to say, each block is connected to another block and the data is distributed across the nodes which makes it difficult for a hacker to corrupt the data. Another major problem in healthcare is counterfeit medication where counterfeit medicine is difficult to be distinguished from real medicine. With the help of supply chain management, the medicine can be traced.

Voting

Voting is one of the most significant area of the society that will be disrupted by blockchain technology. The 2016 Uganda election is not the first time certain parties were accused of changing election results. Blockchain technology can be used for vote counting, voter registration, and verification. An electronic vote counting to ensure that only legitimate votes are counted and no votes are changed or removed.

Government.

Government systems are often opaque, slow and prone to corruption. Implementing blockchain based systems can significantly reduce bureaucracy and increase efficiency, security, and transparency of government operations.
