Young people massively underestimate their cyber security

in #cybersecurity6 years ago

Young people are often touted as the most technically literate. It turns out, however, that many of them continue to underestimate the dangers of the network. For example, 52% of Britons aged 18-25 use only one password for almost everything, according to a survey of the local government quoted by the BBC.

In addition, 79% of all respondents (2261 people) said they had sent important personal data to chat applications or email. This includes bank details, passport copies and other personal documents.

Of course, sending such data is sometimes inevitable and part of everyday life. The main problem here is that people then do not ruin these emails and messages. So they remain in the account or email archive, which makes them a golden treasure for hackers. Thus identity theft can be very easy, warns Mick Dodge, a cyber security expert at the London Police.

"You would not leave your neck open to thieves, then why give them an open invitation to your personal information?" Dodge says.

Using the same password for multiple online services and accounts is a serious risk to personal security. When hackers understand the password for a service, they always try it in other places where the user has an account. Thus, the use of a password invalidates the other protections a company introduces.

Hackers are aware of this consumer practice. So they often attack smaller companies and platforms where security is not so high.

The survey indicates that consumers average 6 different online services on a regular basis. In extreme cases, there are people who regularly use 21 different online platforms. Surprisingly, young people are more likely to use one password for more platforms. On average, 51% of young people, compared to 27% for all respondents regardless of age.

The risk is getting bigger, warners from the organizers of the British campaign Cyber Aware, which is the guarantor of the survey. Therefore, it is very important that people do not use the same password for more than one service. Or at least the most important services have unique and standalone passwords.
