CURIOUS FACTS CONTEST #6 TEN(10) INTERESTING FACTS ABOUT SNAKES
The fear of snake is a common phobia that people have. It's understandable that some snakes are venomous and are capable of killing us so being scared of them is just a matter of instinct, but look on the brighter side, it would be unfair to see snakes as just slimy killers. Snakes are amazing creatures with incredible abilities. Did you know that some snakes can fly? Or some can scare away predators just by Farting? Well now you know, so check out this short compilation of some curious facts about snakes that I found really Astonishing.
1] There are approximately 3,400 snake species on the planet, out of which just about 600 are venomous. And Out of those 600 only 200 pose a serious threat to humans.
I've personally witnessed the brutal killing of a snake and when I looked closely at it I realized it was a feeble, HARMLESS bush snake. Knowledge is truly power.
2] Polycephaly has one of it's highest occurrences in snakes–which is a rare condition of having more than one head. There have been many reported cases of two-headed snakes. The heads sometimes fight each other for food.
Isn't this amazing?
3] When frightened, startled or threatened, the Sonoran coral snake (A.K.A the Arizona coral snake) will tuck its head under its body then raise and tightly curl its tail. In this posture, it will then fart noisily to scare away predators.
A weird but very effective defence strategy, I'm impressed.
4] The decapitated head of a dead snake can still bite even after several hours of death. Most times, such bites contain large amounts of venom.
What other animal can do this?
5] Some snakes can survive without food for close to 2 years, they do this by reducing their energy depleting rate. A particular scientific study went further to suggest that snakes can digest their own hearts when they've starved for too long.
Now this is really stunning.
6] The muscles that causes the rattle of a rattlesnake to shake are some of the fastest known, firing up to 50 times per second on average and sustained for up to 3 hours.
7] The bite from a black mamba, one of the world´s most venomous snakes and also the fastest land snake can kill a human within just 45 minutes and that is the quickest recorded.
This snake still holds this spot till date.
8] An island in Brazil known as the Snake Island, arguably has the highest occurrence of snakes on the planet. It is estimated that there is one snake on every 1 sq m (11 sq ft).
You don't wanna be stuck on this island
9] "Chrysopelea", a genus of snakes known as the flying (or gliding) snakes. They are Native to Southeast Asia, these snakes are capable of gliding or flying over distances as long as (330 ft) 100m.
I have personally witnessed this phenomenon when I was younger and it was really terrifying but they're saying it's only in South Asia, so what did I experience?.
Lastly,
10] Snakes are believed to have originated from four-legged reptilian ancestors, between 94 and 112 million years ago. Some pythons and boas, still have traces of back legs.
This one gave me goosebumps.
