Did you know that fastest temporary fix for depression is a night without sleep? Yes, this unusual and curious fact is scientifically proven.

Of course, sleep deprivation cannot help a depressed person in long-term. But this intervention can be used from time to time as a short-term relief (especially during the time when the patient is waiting for an anti-depressant to kick-in, which usually takes 6 - 8 weeks).

There is - of course - the scientific explanation behind this unusual fact. If we explain it in a very simple way:

  • Astrocytes, are a special type of glial cells that release the neurotransmitter adenosine.
  • Adenosine builds-up during waking hours and it causes sleepiness when accumulated.
  • If we stay awake when sleepy, there is a collateral benefit for the depressed person, since a significant amount of adenosine also has an anti-depressant effect.

More scientific and in-depth explanation o this curious fact you can find here.

Sleep tight and get enough sleep if you can, since it has many benefits for our health and mood. But in certain situations, cannot harm to be aware of this curious fact.
