Laayoune is the largest city in Western Sahara, a disputed city. It is currently run by the Moroccan government after it took control of it during the Western Sahara War of 1975, the center of the region of Laayoune al-Sakia al-Hamra, which Morocco has annexed to the 12 regions of the Kingdom of Morocco. The city was founded by Spanish colonel Antonio de Oro in 1938 as a military base. Spain declared in 1940 the capital city of the Spanish desert overlooking the city of Laayoune on the Atlantic Ocean to the west and characterized by its moderate climate generally under the influence of the sea from the west and desert currents from the south and east. The Moroccan government has worked since the desert was settled in the city with a non-indigenous population, where Moroccans have become more than the Saharan population.
